“2011 als Gyze gegründet, veröffentlicht die japanische Samurai Metal Band RYUJIN am 12. Januar 2024 über Napalm Records ihr erstes selbstbetiteltes Album Ryujin unter neuem Bandnamen. Nach dem sie bereits vier erfolgreiche Alben veröffentlicht haben und weltweit auf großen Festivals aufgetreten sind, haben RYUJIN ihren ganz eigenen Sound entwickelt, der Melodic Death Metal mit Power Metal und traditioneller japanischer Musik verbindet. Benannt nach dem japanischen Drachengott des Meeres, lässt das Trio um den Leadgitarristen Ryoji Shinomoto japanische Instrumente wie Shamisen, Drachenflöten, Erhu und Taiko auf rohes Guitar Shredding und reißende Vocals treffen, womit sie dem Drachengott eine würdige musikalische Huldigung bieten. Auch auf dem neuen Album treffen High Speed Riffs und atemberaubende Gitarrenlininien auf traditionelle japanische Elemente und erzeugen einen Sound, der stark an alten orchestralen Gagaku bis hin zu modernen Anime-Themen erinnert. Ryujin wurde von Matthew Kiichi Heafy (Trivium) produziert und von Mark Lewis gemischt und gemastert und enthält Gastbeiträge von Heafy (Gesang und Mitwirkung auf verschiedenen Tracks) und Mukai Wataru vom Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra (Cello).

Die Texte von RYUJIN sind durch die Sprache des Ainu-Volkes von Hokkaido (Heimatregion der Band) geprägt, thematisieren die Kraft des Meeres und sind unter anderem von berühmten japanischen Gemälden inspiriert. Der instrumentale Opener „Hajimari“ geht in die Death Metal Nummer „Gekokujo“ über, das Thrash-Elemente mit Folk kombiniert und mit technischem Können dargeboten wird. Dabei treffen die rasanten Gitarrensoli von Ryoji auf die ausgefeilten Skills des Schlagzeugers Shuji Shinomoto und des Bassisten Aruta Watanabe. Die erste Single „Raijin & Fujin“ ist ein epischer Power Metal-Sturm mit Gastgesang von Matthew Kiichi Heafy, der sich in einen Tornado aus rasender Double Bass und packenden Soli verwandelt, während „The Rainbow Song“ ebenfalls mit Heafys klaren Gesangslinien und einer Mischung aus modernem Metal und Power Metal besticht. Tracks wie „Dragon, Fly Free“ und „Kunnecup“ entfalten Mitsing-Potential, bevor mit „Scream of the Dragon“ wieder ein extremerer Track folgt, der japanische und englische Texte kombiniert. „Gekirin“ bietet düstere Death Metal-Einflüsse, die in nautisch inspirierte Melodien übergehen und so auch musikalisch des Thema des Drachengotts Ryujin aufgreifen Das Album nähert sich dem Ende mit drei japanischen Tracks: der emotionalen Ballade „Saigo No Hoshi“, dem kraftvollen „Ryujin“ und einem Cover von Linked Horizons „Guren No Yumiya“, das weithin bekannt ist als Eröffnungsthema der beliebten Anime-Serie Attack On Titan. “Founded in 2011 as Gyze, Japanese samurai metal band RYUJIN will release their first self-titled album Ryujin under a new band name on January 12, 2024 via Napalm Records. Having already released four successful albums and performed at major festivals worldwide, RYUJIN have developed their very own sound, combining melodic death metal with power metal and traditional Japanese music. Named after the Japanese dragon god of the sea, the trio around lead guitarist Ryoji Shinomoto combines Japanese instruments such as shamisen, dragon flutes, erhu and taiko with raw guitar shredding and ripping vocals, thus offering a worthy musical homage to the dragon god. On the new album, high-speed riffs and breathtaking guitar lines meet traditional Japanese elements and create a sound that is strongly reminiscent of old orchestral gagaku through to modern anime themes. Ryujin was produced by Matthew Kiichi Heafy (Trivium) and mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis and features guest contributions from Heafy (vocals and participation on various tracks) and Mukai Wataru of the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra (cello).

RYUJIN’s lyrics are influenced by the language of the Ainu people of Hokkaido (the band’s home region), focus on the power of the sea and are inspired by famous Japanese paintings, among other things. The instrumental opener “Hajimari” leads into the death metal number “Gekokujo”, which combines thrash elements with folk and is performed with technical skill. Ryoji’s rapid guitar solos meet the sophisticated skills of drummer Shuji Shinomoto and bassist Aruta Watanabe. The first single “Raijin & Fujin” is an epic power metal storm with guest vocals by Matthew Kiichi Heafy, which turns into a tornado of furious double bass and thrilling solos, while “The Rainbow Song” also impresses with Heafy’s clear vocal lines and a mixture of modern metal and power metal. Tracks like “Dragon, Fly Free” and “Kunnecup” unfold sing-along potential, before “Scream of the Dragon” follows, another extreme track that combines Japanese and English lyrics. “Gekirin” offers dark death metal influences that transition into nautically inspired melodies, musically picking up on the theme of the dragon god Ryujin The album draws to a close with three Japanese tracks: the emotional ballad “Saigo No Hoshi”, the powerful “Ryujin” and a cover of Linked Horizon’s “Guren No Yumiya”, which is widely known as the opening theme to the popular anime series Attack On Titan.
