Mein Name ist Max, ich bin der Sänger der Industrial-Metal-Band Devil-M. Wir leben verteilt in Hamburg, Leipzig und Österreich und haben daher keinen festen Sitz oder eine Art der Herkunft.
Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?
Es fing mit ca. 10 Jahren mit Klavier-Unterricht an. Der Unterricht lief zwar nur ca. drei Jahre, aber das Interesse an der Musik, vor allem eigene Kreationen zu schaffen, blieb. Später schwappte die Experimentierfreude zur elektronischen Musikgestaltung in Form des Musikprogramm eJay Music .
Lebst du von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übst du aus?
Nein und das ist auch gut so, sonst hätte ich den permanenten Druck, Musik zu veröffentlichen und neues Zeug rauszubringen, hinter dem ich vielleicht irgendwann mal gar nicht mehr stehe. Ich bin selbstständiger Grafiker und Programmierer mit entsprechend mehreren Ausbildungen.
Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?
In der Regel immer erst die Melodie. Texte kannst du immer nochmal ändern, eine Melodie, sitzt und bleibt im Kopf. Sie ist in meinen Augen die Basis von allem.
Was ist deine Inspirationsquelle?
Meine eigene Neugier nach Unentdecktem und Unerforschtem. Beim jetzigen Album geht es um die Wiederauferstehung der Titanen, Zeus wird verspeist, Zyklopen gebären Kinder, Sisyphos stirbt…es sind einfach komplett neue Blickwinkel und kreative Neuinterpretationen. Eine Inspiration kann alles sein, dessen Geschichte du letztlich weitererzählst.
Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?
Definitiv nach dem „Flow“. Ich mag viele eigene Songs von mir mit der Zeit auch nicht mehr hören aber jedes Album und jede Show bei uns wirkt immer wie aus einem Guss.
Was bedeutet für dich Musik?
Zum Glück nicht mein Lebensunterhalt aber Ohne könnte ich trotzdem nicht. Oft nehme ich mir meine Gitarre und spiele teils ganze TOOL-Alben runter, ohne zu merken, dass schon wieder zwei Stunden ins Land gezogen sind.
Welche Musik hörst du privat?
Sehr viel TOOL und the White Stripes. TOOL wegen ihrer Symmetrie des Ganzen. Ich kann die Augen schließen und es funktioniert für mich, ähnlich wie Pink Floyd. The White Stripes, weil ich früher eine Coverband hatte und mir dieses Spiel von Jack White schon immer gefiel. Ansonsten höre ich so gut wie keine Musik, ich ziehe die Stille vor.
Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?
David Bowie, Jack White, Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Rob Zombie, Stefan Ackermann
Was ist die wichtigste Musikequipment-Erfindung aller Zeiten-und warum?
Die Kassette. Damit wurde die Musik transportabel.
Erzähle von deiner schönsten oder schlimmsten Erfahrung auf der Bühne.
Die Schönste war ein Konzert 2012 irgendwo im Süden, in einer Studentenstadt. An dem Tag gab ich die musikalische Richtung an, erstmals gab es die ganze Farbe auf der Haut und generell wirkte alles wesentlich härter, als noch zwei Monate zuvor in Bremen.
Die schlimmste Erfahrung war das besagte Konzert in Bremen, zwei Monate vor meiner schönsten Erfahrung. An dem Abend spielten wir als Opener für Fabrik C und Phosgore und wir haben absolut nicht gepasst. Während der gesamten Show hat nicht eine einzige Person geklatscht.
Gibt es Rituale vor der Show?
Vor, während und nach der Show keine Drogen. Ich nehme sie zwar generell nie aber meine Einstellung dazu ist: Wer will, soll es machen aber nicht, auch meine Leute, aber nicht, solange man zu funktionieren hat. Viele glauben es nicht aber ich bin auf der Bühne komplett nüchtern und zu 100% klar bei Sinnen.
Was würdest du deinem 18-Jährigem Ich sagen?
Es kommt genau so, wie du es dir vorgestellt hast.
Hast du schlechte Angewohnheiten?
Ich bin unglaublich faul und suche permanent nach Abkürzungen.
Was machst du, wenn dich niemand sieht?
Auf der Bühne? Mir egal, ich hab da oben immer meinen Spaß.
Was ist der seltsamste Ort, an dem du jemals warst?
Der Backstage-Raum in Mexiko-City.
Was bringt dich auf die Palme?
Doppelmoral und Schnacker. Ich rede auch sehr viel, wenn der Tag lang ist aber halte immer mein Wort und ziehe Dinge durch, auch wenn sie schwer sind. Und wenn ich dann merke, dass andere Personen Bullshit verzapfen, geht mir der Hut hoch.
Gibt es etwas, was Fans machen könnten, für dich als absolutes NoGo wäre?
Distanzlosigkeit. Klar, Fotos, Umarmungen, kurze Unterhaltungen, alles super und cool.
Aber manchmal gibt es auch mal Personen, die kein Ende kennen und einem hinterherlaufen.
Fannah oder doch lieber zurückgezogen?
Nah am Fan.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction
My name is Max, I am the singer of the industrial metal band Devil-M. We live in Hamburg, Leipzig and Austria and therefore have no fixed location or type of origin.
When and how did you come to music?
It started with piano lessons when I was around 10 years old. The lessons only lasted about three years, but the interest in music, especially in creating my own creations, remained. Later, the joy of experimenting spilled over into electronic music creation in the form of the music program eJay Music.
Do you live from music full-time? If no, what is your profession?
No, and that’s a good thing, otherwise I would be under constant pressure to release music and bring out new stuff that I might no longer support at some point. I am a self-employed graphic designer and programmer with several qualifications.
How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?
As a rule, always the melody first. You can always change lyrics, a melody sits and stays in your head. In my eyes it is the basis of everything.
What is your source of inspiration?
My own curiosity for the undiscovered and unexplored. The current album is about the resurrection of the Titans, Zeus gets eaten, Cyclopes give birth, Sisyphus dies…it’s just completely new perspectives and creative reinterpretations. An inspiration can be anything whose story you ultimately tell.
According to which criteria is the setlist put together?
Definitely after the “flow”. I may no longer hear many of my own songs over time, but every album and every show with us always seems like it’s all of a piece.
What does music mean to you?
Luckily it’s not my livelihood but I still couldn’t do it without it. I often pick up my guitar and play through entire TOOL albums without noticing that another two hours have passed.
What music do you listen to privately?
A lot of TOOL and the White Stripes. TOOL because of their symmetry as a whole. I can close my eyes and it works for me, similar to Pink Floyd. The White Stripes, because I used to have a cover band and I always liked Jack White’s playing. Otherwise I hardly listen to any music, I prefer silence.

What is the most important music equipment invetion of all time-and why?
The cassette. This made the music transportable.
Tell us about your best or worst experience on stage.
The most beautiful was a concert in 2012 somewhere in the south, in a student town. That day I set the musical direction, for the first time there was all the color on the skin and in general everything seemed much harder than two months before in Bremen.
The worst experience was the concert in Bremen, two months before my best experience. That night we opened for Fabrik C and Phosgore and we absolutely didn’t fit in. Not a single person sheered during the entire show.
Are there any rituals before the show?
No drugs before, during or after the show. I generally never take them, but my attitude to it is: If you want to, you shouldn’t do it, including my people, but not as long as you have to function. Many people don’t believe it but I’m completely sober on stage and 100% lucid.
What would you say to your 18-year old self?
It comes exactly as you imagined.
What do you do when no ones sees you?
On stage? I don’t care, I always have fun up there.
Do you have any bad habits?
I’m incredibly lazy and constantly looking for shortcuts.
What’s the strangest place you’ve ever been?
The backstage room in Mexico City.
What drives you up the wall?
Double standards and nonsense. I also talk a lot when the day is long, but I always keep my word and see things through, even if they are difficult. And when I notice that other people are spewing bullshit, my hat goes off.
Is there anything that fans might do that would be an absolote no-go for you?
Distancelessness. Sure, photos, hugs, short conversations, everything was great and cool. But sometimes there are people who don’t know the end and run after you.
Close to the fan or would you prefer to keep to yourself?
Close to the fan.
