Stelle dich kurz vor / Bandvorstellung

Hallo und danke für die Einladung zum Interview. Ich bin Martin, Sänger und Gitarrist der Post- Hardcore Band LEAVE. aus Leipzig. Ich denke zumindest, dass Post- Hardcore unseren Stil am besten und kürzesten zusammenfasst. Wir machen in der Konstellation seit ca. 2019 Musik und durften bereits viele große Bands aus der Szene supporten. 2023 wurden wir vom Berliner Label Out Of Line Music unter Vertrag genommen. Seitdem haben wir einige Songs und Videos released und arbeiten weiter daran so viele Leute wie möglich mit unserer Musik zu erreichen.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, wollte ich damals (ca 2005) mit meinen Schulfreunden nur unseren Idolen „nacheifern“. Das waren Bands wie Blink182, Sum41, My Chemical Romance etc. Ich denke MTV hat dabei eine große Rolle gespielt. Wir haben uns die billigsten Instrumente gekauft, die es im Music Store gab und haben im Keller angefangen Songs zu covern. Einer musste singen und dabei haben wir festgestellt, dass ich das anscheinend gut konnte. Danach hat sich das Ganze verselbstständigt und wir wurden immer besser und fingen an eigene Songs zu schreiben. Und obwohl mein Vater mir versichert hat, dass die Gitarre „in 2 Wochen in der Ecke stehen wird“, sind daraus jetzt fast 20 Jahre geworden und Musik nimmt sozusagen fast mein ganzes Leben ein.

Lebst du ihr von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übt ihr aus?

Wir leben nicht von der Musik und gehen alle mehr oder weniger normalen Berufen nach. Mein Job ist unmöglich zu erklären, deswegen sage ich einfach ich bin in der Telekommunikations- Branche. Max ist operationstechnischer Assistent, Benjamin ist Elektroniker und Georg ist Musik- Produzent.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Das ist tatsächlich ganz unterschiedlich. Meistens ist das Instrumental zuerst da und dann schreibt man einen Text und die Melodie. Manchmal sitze ich auch im Auto und habe eine Melodie mit einer Fantasiesprache im Kopf, die ich dann sofort mit meinem Handy aufnehme, um sie nicht zu vergessen. Unser Song „Abyss“ ist z.B. so entstanden.

Was ist deine Inspirationsquelle?

Ehrlich gesagt sauge ich überall irgendwie Musik auf, egal wo ich bin. Manchmal höre ich eine Melodie, die dann im Kopf total Sinn ergibt und mich inspiriert, aber eigentlich war sie real ganz anders. Was mich sehr inspiriert ist Filmmusik, vielleicht merkt man das auch an den großen, sphärischen Refrains, haha. Das Instrumental von „I Just Feel Worse“ ist mir z.B. eingefallen als ich irgend ein Staffelfinale von „Shameless“ geguckt habe. Natürlich lässt man sich auch stark von Bands inspirieren, die man mag, aber am Ende klingt es dann doch wieder mehr nach Leave.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Das Thema habe ich früher viel zu ernst genommen, haha. Ich habe mit dem Quintenzirkel geguckt welche Tonarten möglichst gut zusammen passen, damit es für die Zuschauer nicht weird klingt, aber das ist am Ende total egal. Mittlerweile denke ich am Anfang des Sets muss man ein bisschen mehr Gas geben um das Publikum früh zu kriegen und am Ende bringt man noch mal 1-2 Hits.

Was bedeutet für dich Musik?

Ohne jetzt irgendwelche Phrasen dreschen zu wollen, aber Musik bedeutet mir alles. Ich wüsste nicht, was ich heute machen würde, wenn ich nicht irgendwann mal die Idee gehabt hätte, mir diese billige Gitarre zu kaufen. Allein was man seitdem alles erlebt hat und welche Leute man dadurch kennengelernt hat, ist unbezahlbar.

Welche Musik hörst ihr privat?

Ich denke einig sind wir uns auf jeden Fall bei Metalcore und Post- Hardcore. Georg und ich kommen mehr aus der 2000er Emo, Pop- Punk Richtung. Max kommt vom Melodic Deathmetal und Benjamins Musikgeschmack ist sehr schwer zu beschreiben. Er hört glaube ich sowohl die härteste, als auch die softeste Musik von uns, haha. Ansonsten höre ich noch viel Emo- Trap und Pop (Taylor Swift und Billie Eilish z.B.).

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Vorbilder für LEAVE. sind Bands wie: Holding Absence, Bad Omens, BMTH, Dayseeker, The Plot In You

Gesanglich waren Freddie Mercury und Jared Leto immer Vorbilder für mich.

Fünf Fakten über euch

• Georg lernt nie unsere Songs, er hört sie sich einfach auf der Toilette an und kann sie dann perfekt spielen
• Als wir einen Gitarristen gesucht haben, wollte Max zuerst nicht in eine neu gegründete Band einsteigen und dann sind wir uns Monate später wieder über den Weg gelaufen
• Wir hatten mal einen Fernseh- Auftritt
• Martin kauft sich vor jeder Show Carazza und Sprite um die anderen zu ärgern. Sie hassen den Geruch.
• Die Zeile „And I Wrote That For You“ aus unserem meist gestreamten Song „Absence“ ist nur entstanden, weil es Benjamin immer so verstanden hat, obwohl der Text ein ganz anderer war

Worte an die Fans

Wir möchten euch natürlich für den Support im letzten Jahr danken und hoffen, dass Ihr auch im neuen Jahr dran bleibt. Wir haben viele Sachen geplant, auf die wir uns freuen können und vielleicht auch die ein oder andere Überraschung. Wir haben das Gefühl, dass unsere Community langsam wächst und sind sehr froh über euer Feedback zu den neuen Songs und vor allem nach den Shows am Merch etc.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

Hello and thank you for inviting me to the interview. I’m Martin, singer and guitarist of the post-hardcore band LEAVE. from Leipzig. At least I think that post-hardcore sums up our style best and most succinctly. We have been making music in this constellation since around 2019 and have already been able to support many big bands from the scene. In 2023 we were signed by the Berlin label Out Of Line Music. Since then we have released a few songs and videos and are continuing to work on reaching as many people as possible with our music.

When and how did you come to music?

To be completely honest, back then (around 2005) I and my school friends just wanted to “emulate” our idols. These were bands like Blink182, Sum41, My Chemical Romance etc. I think MTV played a big role in that. We bought the cheapest instruments available in the music store and started covering songs in the basement. One of them had to sing and we discovered that I seemed to be good at it. After that the whole thing took on a life of its own and we got better and better and started writing our own songs. And although my father assured me that the guitar “will be in the corner in 2 weeks”, it has now turned into almost 20 years and music takes up almost my entire life.

Do you live from music full-time? If no, what is your profession?

We don’t make a living from music and we all have more or less normal jobs. My job is impossible to explain, so I’ll just say I’m in the telecommunications industry. Max is an operational assistant, Benjamin is an electronics engineer and Georg is a music producer.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

This is actually very different. Most of the time the instrumental comes first and then you write lyrics and the melody. Sometimes I’m sitting in the car and have a melody with an imaginary language in my head, which I then immediately record on my cell phone so that I don’t forget it. Our song “Abyss”, for example, was created this way.

What is your source of inspiration?

Honestly, I kind of absorb music wherever I go. Sometimes I hear a melody that makes total sense in my head and inspires me, but actually it was completely different in reality. What inspires me a lot is film music, maybe you can tell by the big, spherical choruses, haha. For example, the instrumental of “I Just Feel Worse” came to mind when I was watching a season finale of “Shameless”. Of course you get a lot of inspiration from bands you like, but in the end it sounds more like Leave.

According to which criteria is the setlist put together?

I used to take the topic far too seriously, haha. I used the circle of fifths to see which keys fit together as best as possible so that it wouldn’t sound weird to the audience, but in the end it doesn’t matter at all. Now I think at the beginning of the set you have to give it a little more gas to get the audience early and at the end you have another 1-2 hits.

What does music mean to you?

Without wanting to use any phrases, but music means everything to me. I don’t know what I would be doing today if I hadn’t had the idea of buying this cheap guitar at some point. Just what you have experienced since then and the people you have met as a result is priceless.

What music do you listen to privately?

I think we definitely agree on metalcore and post-hardcore. Georg and I come more from the 2000s emo, pop-punk direction. Max comes from melodic death metal and Benjamin’s taste in music is very difficult to describe. I think he listens to both the hardest and softest music of us, haha. Otherwise I still listen to a lot of emo trap and pop (Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, for example).

Are there any musical role models?

Role models for LEAVE. are bands like: Holding Absence, Bad Omens, BMTH, Dayseeker, The Plot In You

Vocally, Freddie Mercury and Jared Leto have always been role models for me.

Five facts about you

• Georg never learns our songs, he just listens to them on the toilet and can then play them perfectly
• When we were looking for a guitarist, Max initially didn’t want to join a newly formed band and then we ran into each other again later
• We once appeared on television
• Martin buys Carazza and Sprite before every show to annoy the others. They hate the smell.
• The line “And I Wrote That For You” from our most streamed song “Absence” only came about because Benjamin always understood it that way, even though the lyrics were completely different

What else would you like to tell your fans?

We would of course like to thank you for your support last year and hope that you will stick with us in the new year. We have a lot of things planned to look forward to and maybe a surprise or two. We have the feeling that our community is slowly growing and are very happy about your feedback on the new songs and especially after the shows on the merch etc.
