Charly: Ich bin Sänger und Texter der Band Eisfabrik, diese Band habe ich mit Gerrit Ende 2012 gegründet.

Gerrit: Ich bin für Komposition und Produktion verantwortlich.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Charly: Wie es fast immer so ist, war es eher Zufall, dass ich Sänger wurde. Der einzige Grund war, dass ich kein Instrument beherrschte und einfach auch sehr faul bin, was das betrifft. Meine ersten Gehversuche mit der Musik habe ich als 15-jähriger mit einem kleinen Keyboard gemacht, das konnte man getrost vergessen und das merkte ich auch sehr schnell, dennoch kann ich den Text, den ich damals geschrieben habe, noch auswendig.

Gerrit: Ich wollte schon als kleiner Junge Musik machen und hab mein erstes Keyboard im Alter von sieben oder acht Jahren bekommen – das legendäre, monophone Casio mit Minitasten, mit welchem z. B. Trio ihren Hit „Da da da“ performt haben. Das war natürlich nur Spielerei. Ernster wurde das dann mit ca. 15 Jahren, als wir langsam anfingen, uns regelmäßig bei einem Klassenkameraden- der übrigens heute Label-Boss einer kleinen Plattenfirma ist- zu treffen, um am Amiga Computer die ersten zusammenhängenden Lieder zu programmieren. Aus dieser Konstellation entstand dann irgendwann meine erste Band „Ravenous“.

Lebst du von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übst du aus?

Charly: Hauptberuflich bin ich in einer ganz anderen Richtung tätig. Ich habe ein Straßenbauunternehmen und bin dort neben der Musik auch voll ausgelastet. Ich hatte auch nie Ambitionen, die Musik als Hauptberuf auszuüben, da ich nicht besonders gern viel unterwegs bin.

Gerrit: Ich bin seit 1997 hauptberuflich Produzent und Musiker. Dabei hatte ich das Glück, dass meine Eltern mir zu Beginn die Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung gestellt und überwiegend auch mein Leben finanziert haben, bis das Anfang der 2000er richtig ins Rollen kam.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Charly: In der Regel beginnt Gerrit mit der Musik und dann schreibe ich den Text. Ich kann auf einen Song besser den Text schreiben als andersherum. Es gibt auch Ausnahmen, da habe ich vorher einen Text fertig und Gerrit schreibt dann das passende Stück dazu.

Was ist deine Inspirationsquelle?

Charly: Ich behaupte einfach mal das Leben und die Erfahrungen, die ich gemacht habe. Hier gibt es auch wieder Ausnahmen, da schreibe ich einfach das, was mir einfällt.

Gerrit: Mich inspirieren oft Intention, Atmosphäre oder Stimmung in Filmen oder Dokumentationen. Da schnappe ich ein Gefühl auf und versuche es, musikalisch umzusetzen. Unsere Songs entstehen meistens nur mit Flächen oder einer Piano-Linie. Wenn mir die Phrasen gefallen, bastele ich den typischen Eisfabrik-Sound drumherum. Bei meinen anderen Projekten ist das ähnlich.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Charly: Es kommt immer darauf an, wie viel Zeit wir auf der Bühne haben. Bei kurzen Sets bis zu 45 Minuten muss es scheppern, da ist es in unseren Augen nicht ratsam, Balladen zu spielen, das kann man gern zum Verschnaufen in einem langen Set unterbringen.

Gerrit: Wenn ich ein Live-Set erstelle, achte ich darauf, dass eine Steigerung der Dramaturgie gegeben ist. Langsam anfüttern und hitgewaltig aufhören, ist da Tango.

Was bedeutet für euch Musik?

Charly: Verarbeitung, Erinnerungen, Ideen, Wünsche zu verarbeiten, ist eigentlich die Hauptsache. Ich denke, das macht jeder Mensch, da bin ich kein Einzelfall.

Gerrit: Da stimme ich zu. Gefühle spielen hier auch eine große Rolle.

Welche Musik hörst du privat?

Charly: Ich habe keine bestimmte Band, die ich höre. Querbeet durch die Musikgeschichte, ich höre einfach das, was meinen Ohren guttut und quäle mich nicht mit Musik, die mich nervös macht.

Gerrit: Ich bin auch in keinem festen Genre verwachsen, neige aber mehr zu elektronischen Klängen aller Art und melancholischen Songs. Auch Filmmusik befindet sich in meinen Playlisten.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Charly: Nein, Vorbilder habe ich nicht, dann würde ich wahrscheinlich zu sehr nach demjenigen klingen. Sehr cool fand ich immer Pink Floyd, diese Musikrichtung habe ich jedoch nie selbst ausgeführt.

Gerrit: Ich habe als großer DM- und Front-242-Fan angefangen, Musik zu machen. Aber als Vorbilder sehe ich diese Bands nicht. Ich wollte nie genauso klingen wie eine andere Band, sondern war schon immer auf dem Weg zu meinem eigenen Sound.

Charly: Zurzeit befinden wir uns in einer kleinen Schaffenspause, da unsere Tour gerade beendet ist. Im Sommer stehen noch zwei Auftritte bei Festivals an und im Dezember unser Jahresabschlusskonzert in Hameln. Ein neues Album ist für 2025 geplant.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

Charly: I am the singer and lyricist of the band Eisfabrik, which I founded with Gerrit at the end of 2012.

Gerrit: I’m responsible for composition and production.

When and how did you get into music?

Charly: As is almost always the case, it was more by chance that I became a singer. The only reason was that I didn’t know how to play an instrument and I’m just very lazy when it comes to that. I made my first attempts at music as a 15-year-old with a small keyboard, you could forget that and I realized that very quickly, but I still know the lyrics I wrote back then by heart.

Gerrit: I wanted to make music even as a little boy and got my first keyboard at the age of seven or eight – the legendary monophonic Casio with mini keys, which Trio, for example, used to perform their hit “Da da da”. Of course, that was just a gimmick. It became more serious when I was about 15, when we slowly started to meet regularly at a classmate’s house – who is now the label boss of a small record company – to program the first coherent songs on the Amiga computer. My first band “Ravenous” emerged from this constellation at some point.

Do you make your living from music? If not, what profession do you have?

Charly: My main job is in a completely different field. I have a road construction company and I’m fully occupied there as well as making music. I never had any ambitions to make music my main job, as I don’t particularly like being on the road a lot.

Gerrit: I’ve been a full-time producer and musician since 1997. I was lucky that my parents provided me with the premises at the beginning and also financed most of my life until it really got going in the early 2000s.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

Charly: As a rule, Gerrit starts with the music and then I write the lyrics. I can write the lyrics to a song better than the other way around. There are also exceptions where I have a lyric ready beforehand and Gerrit then writes the song to go with it.

What is your source of inspiration?

Charly: I would simply say life and the experiences I have had. There are also exceptions here, where I just write whatever comes to mind.

Gerrit: I’m often inspired by the intention, atmosphere or mood in films or documentaries. I pick up on a feeling and try to translate it into music. Our songs are usually created with just pads or a piano line. If I like the phrases, I build the typical Eisfabrik sound around them. It’s similar with my other projects.

What criteria do you use to put together the setlist?

Charly: It always depends on how much time we have on stage. With short sets of up to 45 minutes, it has to be rattling, so we don’t think it’s advisable to play ballads, you can put that in a long set to catch your breath.

Gerrit: When I create a live set, I make sure that the dramaturgy builds up. A slow start and a powerful end is a tango.

What does music mean to you?

Charly: Processing, memories, ideas, wishes is actually the main thing. I think everyone does that, I’m not the only one.

Gerrit: I agree with that. Emotions also play a big role here.

What music do you listen to in your private life?

Charly: I don’t have a specific band that I listen to. I just listen to whatever is good for my ears and don’t torture myself with music that makes me nervous.

Gerrit: I don’t have a fixed genre either, but I tend more towards electronic sounds of all kinds and melancholy songs. Film music is also on my playlists.

Do you have any musical role models?

Charly: No, I don’t have any role models, then I would probably sound too much like them. I always thought Pink Floyd was very cool, but I’ve never played that style of music myself.

Gerrit: I started making music as a big DM and Front 242 fan. But I don’t see these bands as role models. I never wanted to sound exactly like another band, but have always been on the way to my own sound.

Charly: At the moment we’re taking a little creative break as our tour has just finished. We have two more gigs at festivals in the summer and our end-of-year concert in Hameln in December.
