Interview: Project JU

Stellt euch kurz vor! Bandvorstellung!

Jens: Wir sind Projekt JU, ein zweiköpfiges Darkrock-Projekt aus dem Saarland, das JU steht dabei für Jens Usner, da ich als Sänger und Texter hauptsächlich für die textliche und musikalische Ausrichtung verantwortlich bin.

Markus: Ich spiele Schlagzeug und leite das Geschäftliche im Hintergrund, bestimme aber auch mit Jens die musikalischen Arrangements der Songs.

Jens: Wir gründeten uns im Januar 2021 und sind eigentlich ein Corona-Projekt. Als die Welt damals im Lockdown gefangen war, schrieben wir 2 die ersten Songs für NEULAND. Diese nahmen wir dann ein paar Monate später zusammen mit befreundeten, teils auch weltbekannten Musikern auf: zum Beispiel mit Guy Erez (Miley Cyrus, Alan Parsons Project)am Bass, Benni Cellini (Letzte Instanz) am Cello, Alen Brentini an der Gitarre und Martin Gerschwitz (u.a.Lita Ford, Eric Burdon) an den Keybords.

Wann und wie seid ihr zur Musik gekommen?

Markus: Ich habe im Alter von 12 Jahren „Wewillrockyou“gehört und von da an war mir klar, wohin die Reise geht.

Jens: Ich sah mit 12 Jahren den Film „Flamingstar“mit Elvis Presley und von da an wusste ich um meine Bestimmung.

Lebt ihr von der Musik hauptberuflich?

Jens: Ja, wir sind beide Berufsmusiker. Neben Projekt JU unterrichte ich Gesang und Stimmbildung an einer Musikschule.

Markus: Ich jobbe neben meiner Musik in einem Musikladen und gebe Schlagzeugunterricht.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Zuerst die Melodie oder zuerst der Text?

Meistens entstehen in meinem Kopf zuerst Melodien, die ich zuerst einmal aufnehme und mir danach Bilder und Handlungsstränge vorstelle, die ich dann versuche in passenden Worten zu Papier zu bringen.

Was ist eure Inspirationsquelle?

Jens: Hauptsächlich Bücher und Filme, aber auch oft reale Gegebenheiten die mich zum Nachdenken anregen.

Markus: Die Menschen um mich herum..

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Markus: Das ist immer abhängig von der Situation, ob wir als Support oder als Headliner spielen, und auch abhängig von der Länge des Konzerts.

Was bedeutet für dich Musik?

Markus: Gefühl

Jens: Für mich ist Musik so wichtig, wie die Luft zum Atmen

Welche Musik hört ihr privat?

Markus: Alles was mir gefällt

Jens: Überwiegend Rock, Metal und Klassik, in meinem Plattenschrank findet man sowohl alles von Black Sabbath, als auch von Chopin. Da ich allerdings beruflich immer mit Musik zu tun habe, höre ich leider privat sehr selten Musik.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Markus: Jim Morrison, Bon Scott, Jerry Lew Lewis und natürlich ein paar Drum-Heroes wie John Bonham, Carmine Appice, Tommy Lee und Christian Eigner.

Jens: Musikalisch ganz unterschiedliche Sänger und Musiker wie Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, Pete Steele oder auch Peter Gabriel, in textlicher Hinsicht haben mich wohl Charles Baudelaire, Patti Smith und Edgar Allan Poe stark beeinflusst.

5 Fakten über dich

Jens: Privat trifft man mich wohl genauso oft im Fitnessstudio, wie in der städtischen Bibliothek, außerdem gehe ich gerne ins Kino oder einfach mal ins Pub um die Ecke. Im Gegensatz zu meinem Beruf, lebe ich privat aber auch gerne zurückgezogen, was gerade für meine kreative Arbeit sehr wichtig ist.

Markus: Es ist Fakt, das ich so bin wie ich bin.

Introduce yourselves! Band introduction!

Jens: We are Projekt JU, a two-piece dark rock project from the Saarland, the JU stands for Jens Usner, as I am the singer and lyricist and mainly responsible for the lyrics and music.

Markus: I play drums and manage the business side of things in the background, but I also decide the musical arrangements of the songs together with Jens.

Jens: We were founded in January 2021 and are actually a coronavirus project. When the world was in lockdown at the time, the two of us wrote the first songs for NEULAND. We then recorded them a few months later together with friends, some of them world-famous musicians: for example with Guy Erez (Miley Cyrus, Alan Parsons Project) on bass, Benni Cellini (Letzte Instanz) on cello, Alen Brentini on guitar and Martin Gerschwitz (Lita Ford, Eric Burdon, among others) on keyboards.

When and how did you get into music?

Markus: I heard “Wewillrockyou” at the age of 12 and from then on it was clear to me where the journey would take me.

Jens: I saw the movie “Flamingstar” with Elvis Presley when I was 12 and from then on I knew my destiny.

Do you make a full-time living from music?

Jens: Yes, we are both professional musicians. In addition to Project JU, I teach singing and voice training at a music school.

Markus: Alongside my music, I work in a music store and give drum lessons.

How is a song created? First the melody or first the lyrics?

I usually create melodies in my head first, which I first record and then imagine images and storylines, which I then try to put down on paper in suitable words.

What is your source of inspiration?

Jens: Mainly books and films, but also often real-life situations that make me think.

Markus: The people around me.

What criteria do you use to put together the setlist?

Markus: It always depends on the situation, whether we’re playing as support or as a headliner, and also on the length of the concert.

What does music mean to you?

Markus: Feeling

Jens: For me, music is as important as the air we breathe

What music do you listen to privately?

Markus: Everything I like

Jens: Mainly rock, metal and classical music, in my record cabinet you can find everything by Black Sabbath as well as Chopin. However, as I always have to deal with music at work, I unfortunately very rarely listen to music in my private life.

Are there any musical role models?

Markus: Jim Morrison, Bon Scott, Jerry Lew Lewis and of course a few drum heroes like John Bonham, Carmine Appice, Tommy Lee and Christian Eigner.

Jens: Musically, very different singers and musicians such as Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, Pete Steele and Peter Gabriel. Lyrically, Charles Baudelaire, Patti Smith and Edgar Allan Poe have probably influenced me a lot.

Jens: In my private life, you can probably find me at the gym just as often as in the public library, and I also like going to the movies or just to the pub around the corner. In contrast to my job, I also like to live a secluded life in my private life, which is very important for my creative work.

Markus: It’s a fact that I am who I am.
