Hallo, ihr Lieben! Wir sind Northpolyptica, eine kleine 2-Mann-1-Frau-Band aus Deutschland.
In dieser Konstellation machen wir jetzt schon acht Jahre zusammen Musik.
Musikalisch können wir uns einfach nicht einigen, tagesaktuell sagen wir meisten etwas zwischen Synth-Rock, Gothic und Dark Wave. Einige Elemente sind aber immer dabei: Synthethische Sounds, mehrstimmiger Gesang und das Spiel mit Text und Stimme.

Wenn wir in diesem Interview aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählen, lest ihr Cynthias Blickwinkel – dem weiblichen Gesangspart der Band.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Es ist total schwer, das auf einen Zeitpunkt festzunageln. Ich habe nie eine gesangliche Ausbildung gemacht, sondern einfach immer nur gesungen. Und weil ich zu untalentiert mit Instrumenten bin, bin ich irgendwann auf die Suche nach Begleitung gegangen und habe sie ums Ende 2011 herum in John gefunden – mit dem ich inzwischen 12 Jahre zusammen und zwei Jahre verheiratet bin.
Und weil wir zu zweit immer noch nicht umsetzen konnten, was wir uns gewünscht haben, kam 2016 Markus dazu, der auf seinen Instrumenten alles Erdenkliche zaubern kann.

Lebst du von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übst du aus?

Nein, wir leben nicht von der Musik, nicht mal annähernd. Und wenn wir es könnten, bin ich nicht sicher, dass wir es würden. „Mache ein Hobby zum Beruf und du verlierst ein Hobby“, wie es so schön heißt.
Aber wir machen durch die obligatorische Auftragsproduktion hier und dort keine großen Verluste, das ist in der Musik schon Privileg genug.

Hauptberuflich bin ich Marketing Manager und Mediengestalter.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Ganz unterschiedlich. Beim neuen Album war es so, dass erst die Idee, die Stimmung des jeweiligen Songs stand. Markus übersetzt diese Idee in Musik, dann kümmere ich mich um den Text, zuletzt lassen John und ich die Gesangsmelodie entstehen. Da werden eine Menge Daten hin- und hergeschickt, da wir räumlich ziemlich weit voneinander entfernt sind.

Was ist deine Inspirationsquelle?

Auch Verschiedenes. Etwas, das mich beschäftigt, Lebenserfahrungen, Momentaufnahmen, eine witzige Idee oder eine Geschichte ohne Bezug zu irgendwas.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Da wir nicht auftreten, haben wir keine Setlist.

Was bedeutet für dich Musik?

Selbstausdruck, Stressabbau, Rückzug.

Welche Musik hörst du privat?

Was unsere Musik sicherlich so spannend macht, ist, dass wir alle musikalisch aus etwas anderen Richtungen kommen. Hätte Ville Valo sich dort nicht schon verewigt, würde man vermutlich Johns Bild im Wörterbuch neben dem Begriff Love Metal finden. Markus ist großer Fan der Musik von The Birthday Massacre, was an manchen Stellen auch bei Northpolyptica rauszuhören ist.
Und ich habe die längste Zeit meines Lebens Symphonic und Folk Metal á la Xandria und Subway to Sally gelebt. Generell sind wir aber auch alle von Soundtrack-Musik begeistert, wo dann oft alles zusammenkommt.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Ich bewundere Dianne van Giersbergen, weil sie fraugewordenes Charisma und Talent ist.

Was ist die wichtigste Musikequipment-Erfindung aller Zeiten-und warum?

So gut kenne ich mich da nicht aus, aber vermutlich für die Allgemeinheit leistbare Mikrofone, Audio Interfaces, DAWs. Heutzutage kann man schon mit kleinem Geld einfach mal anfangen!

Was würdest du deinem 18-Jährigem Ich sagen?

Durchhalten.

Was machst du, wenn dich niemand sieht?

In der Regel all die Arbeit, die nötig ist, um das zeigen zu können, was man dann sieht.

• John und ich haben zwei wundervolle Hunde aus dem griechischen Tierschutz, die uns dank Homeoffice 24/7 begleiten.
• Ich habe 207 Stunden in Dragons Dogma 2 und eine große Silent Hill Patchwork-Sammlung.
• Einer meiner großen Träume ist, ein Wohnmobil zu besitzen und damit durch Deutschland zu fahren – Mann und Hunde im Gepäck.
• Ich finde die Wartezeit auf Good Omens Staffel 3 viel zu lang.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

Hello, dear ones! We are Northpolyptica, a small two-man, one-woman band from Germany.
We’ve been making music together in this formation for eight years now. Musically, we just can’t settle on one genre; on any given day, we usually describe ourselves as something between synth-rock, gothic, and dark wave. However, some elements are always present: synthetic sounds, multi-part vocals, and the interplay of lyrics and voice.

When we speak from the first-person perspective in this interview, you are reading Cynthia’s viewpoint – the female vocal part of the band.

When and how did you come to music?

It is really hard to pinpoint a specific moment. I never had formal vocal training; I’ve just always sung.
And because I’m too untalented with instruments, I eventually went looking for accompaniment and found it in John around the end of 2011 – with whom I’ve now been together for 12 years and married for two. And because the two of us still couldn’t achieve what we envisioned, Markus joined us in 2016, who can conjure up anything imaginable on his instruments.

Do you live from music full-time? If no, what is your profession?

No, we don’t make a living from music, not even close. And even if we could, I’m not sure we would.
„Turn a hobby into a profession, and you lose a hobby,“ as the saying goes.
But by doing the occasional commissioned work here and there, we don’t incur significant losses, which is privilege enough in the music industry.

In my main job, I am a marketing manager and media designer.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

It varies a lot. For the new album, it started with the idea and the mood of each song.
Markus translates this idea into music, then I take care of the lyrics. Finally, John and I develop the vocal melody.
A lot of data is sent back and forth since we are quite far apart geographically.

What is your source of inspiration?

Various things. Something that preoccupies me, life experiences, snapshots, a funny idea, or a story unrelated to anything.

According to which criteria is the setlist put together?

Since we don’t perform live, we don’t have a setlist.

What does music mean to you?

Self-expression, stress relief, retreat.

What music do you listen to privately?

What makes our music so exciting is that we all come from slightly different musical backgrounds.
If Ville Valo hadn’t already made his mark there, you’d probably find John’s picture in the dictionary next to the term Love Metal. Markus is a huge fan of The Birthday Massacre, which can be heard in some parts of Northpolyptica. And I have lived most of my life immersed in symphonic and folk metal à la Xandria and Subway to Sally. However, we all share a love for soundtrack music, where everything often comes together.

Are there any musical role models?

I admire Dianne van Giersbergen because she embodies charisma and talent.

What is the most important music equipment invetion of all time-and why?

I’m not an expert, but probably affordable microphones, audio interfaces, and DAWs.
Nowadays, you can start making music with a small budget!

What would you say to your 18-year old self?

Hang in there.

What do you do when no ones sees you?

Usually all the work needed to show what people eventually see.

Five facts about you

• John and I have two wonderful dogs from Greek animal rescue, who accompany us 24/7 thanks to home office.
• I have spent 207 hours playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 and have a large Silent Hill patchwork collection.
• One of my big dreams is to own a motorhome and travel through Germany with my husband and dogs.
• I find the wait for Good Omens Season 3 way too long.
