Wir sind Bad Marilyn aus der Schweiz. Wir machen Powermetal mit Death- und Heavyeinflüssen.

Wann und wie seid ihr zur Musik gekommen?

Wir sind alles langjährige Musiker, die bereits auf vielen Bühnen Europas und den USA gestanden sind und daher viel Erfahrung mitbringen. Die Musik begleitet uns alle schon unser ganzes Leben lang voll intensiv. Doch Bad Marilyn entstand 2023 und seit September sind wir öffentlich unterwegs.

Lebt ihr von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übt ihr aus

Einige von uns sind Berufsmusiker, andere tauschen ihren Bürojob hoffentlich bald mit der Musik ein 😀

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Eh, dies ist sehr unterschiedlich. Allgemein: Sammy, unser Gitarrist, macht oft den Anfang. Er entwickelt Riffs und Abfolgen, dann kommen die Keyboardmelodien und Bassriffs dazu und anschliessend die Gesangsmelodien und der Text. Am Ende ballert unser Schlagzeuger seinen Groove bei und unser Produzent mistet unnötige Parts wieder aus. Es ist also ein Prozess, der stets wächst und reift und von allen Seiten Offenheit und Neugier für neue Ideen fordert.

Was ist eure Inspirationsquelle?

Wir haben beim Songwriting einerseits die Powermetalbasis, die von Helloween und anderen Powermetalbands inspiriert wurde und anderseits haben wir viel Arch Enemy und Battle Beast gehört und uns von Alissa White-Gluz’s Growls, gewissen Riffs oder Chorus-Lines und Gesangsverzerrungen von Noora Louhimo beeinflussen lassen.

Aber die Einflüsse enden nicht dort. Prog Metal und eine Vielzahl von anderen Musikstielen, auch klassische Musik, können uns auf neue Ideen bringen.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

In erster Linie muss eine Live-Show knallen und einheizen. Die Aufgabe einer Setlist, ist unserer Meinung nach, dass dieser Sinn und Zweck erfüllt wird mit der richtigen Reihenfolge der Songs. Natürlich gibt’s da noch andere Kriterien, wie beispielsweise: In welchen Song wird die Gitarre gewechselt, wo muss Zeit sein, um Instrumente zu stimmen, welche Dynamiken haben die Songs und welche passen besser hintereinander und welche weniger. Du siehst, es ist nicht ganz einfach, die passende Setlist zu erstellen. 😊

Was bedeutet für euch Musik?

Musik ist unser Ventil, um Emotionen rauszulassen, kreativ zu sein, Stimmungen aufzufangen. Musik ist unser Leben und gibt uns die Möglichkeit, gemeinsam aktiv zu sein und Menschen etwas zurückzugeben. Jeder in unserer Band liebt sein Instrument und verbringt täglich Zeit damit, es auszuüben. Die Musik von Bad Marilyn bedeutet für uns Zusammenhalt, gute Stimmung und das Spüren des Feuers im Blut bei jedem Takt, den wir gemeinsam rausballern.

Welche Musik hört ihr privat?

Also das ist ganz unterschiedlich. Wo einige nur Metal hören, hören andere auch ganz andere Musik wie Pop, Klassik, teilweise gar Hip Hop (Oldschool sei genannt). Hauptsächlich wird aber natürlich schon Metal quer durch alle Genres gehört.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Für uns als Band sind sicherlich Halloween, Battle Beast und Arch Enemy Inspirationen und so gesehen auch eine Art Vorbilder. Auf persönlicher Ebene hat jeder seine eigenen Vorbilder. Bei mir sind das beispielsweise Celine Dion und Andrea Boccelli, was die Gesangstechnik und der emotionale Wert der Stimme angeht und Alissa White-Gluz im Bereich Growling und Stageperformance, aber auch Floor Jansen sei hier genannt. Sie ist ein Beast des Gesanges.

Introduce yourself / Band introduction

We are Bad Marilyn from Switzerland. We play power metal with death and heavy influences.

When and how did you get into music?

We are all longtime musicians who have played on many stages in Europe and the USA and therefore have a lot of experience. Music has been with us intensively all our lives. But Bad Marilyn was formed in 2023 and we’ve been touring publicly since September.

Do you make a full-time living from music? If not, what profession do you have

Some of us are professional musicians, others will hopefully swap their office job for music soon 😀

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

Eh, this is very different. In general: Sammy, our guitarist, often starts things off. He develops riffs and sequences, then the keyboard melodies and bass riffs are added and then the vocal melodies and lyrics. At the end, our drummer adds his groove and our producer removes unnecessary parts. So it’s a process that is constantly growing and maturing and requires openness and curiosity for new ideas from all sides.

What is your source of inspiration?

On the one hand we have the power metal base inspired by Helloween and other power metal bands and on the other hand we listened to a lot of Arch Enemy and Battle Beast and were influenced by Alissa White-Gluz’s growls, certain riffs or chorus lines and vocal distortions by Noora Louhimo.

But the influences don’t end there. Prog metal and a variety of other musical styles, including classical music, can give us new ideas.

What criteria are used to put together the setlist?

First and foremost, a live show has to bang and heat things up. In our opinion, the task of a setlist is to fulfill this purpose by putting the songs in the right order. Of course there are other criteria, such as: In which song is the guitar changed, where must there be time to tune instruments, what dynamics do the songs have and which fit better one after the other and which less. As you can see, it’s not easy to create the right setlist. 😊

What does music mean to you?

Music is our outlet to let out emotions, to be creative, to absorb moods. Music is our life and gives us the opportunity to be active together and give something back to people. Everyone in our band loves their instrument and spends time practicing it every day. For us, the music of Bad Marilyn means cohesion, good vibes and feeling the fire in our blood with every beat we bang out together.

What music do you listen to in private?

Well, it’s very different. While some only listen to metal, others also listen to completely different music such as pop, classical music and sometimes even hip hop (old school, for example). But of course we mainly listen to metal across all genres.

Are there any musical role models?

For us as a band, Halloween, Battle Beast and Arch Enemy are certainly inspirations and, in that sense, also role models. On a personal level, everyone has their own role models. For me, for example, it’s Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli in terms of vocal technique and the emotional value of the voice, and Alissa White-Gluz in terms of growling and stage performance, but Floor Jansen should also be mentioned here. She is a beast of a singer.
