Ich bin Krz. Ich mache den Gesang und einige Produktionen bei Frontal Boundary. Ich spiele auch elektronische Drums für einige andere Projekte wie Dawn of Ashes, Inva//id und Bornless Fire.

Ich bin Brendin, ich spiele Synthesizer und mache Produktion/Songwriting für Frontal Boundary. Ich spiele auch Synthesizer in anderen Projekten wie Dawn of Ashes, INVA//ID und Bornless Fire.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Krz – Ich habe Musik schon immer geliebt. Ich bin in den späten 80ern und 90ern aufgewachsen und habe einfach alles Mögliche gehört… Spice up your life. 😊

Brendin – Ich habe Musik geliebt, solange ich denken kann. Schon in jungen Jahren wollte ich Schlagzeuger werden, aber meine Familie entschied, dass eine Gitarre ihnen helfen würde, ihren Verstand zu behalten. Also mache ich Musik, seit ich 11 Jahre alt bin.

Lebst du hauptberuflich von der Musik? Wenn nein, was ist dein Beruf?

Krz – Schön wär’s! Ich bin Logistik- und Lagermanager einer Firma für Theaterkulissen in Los Angeles.

Brendin – So in etwa. Musik ist meine Haupteinnahmequelle. Ich mache eine Menge Produktionsarbeit für andere Bands, einschließlich Mixing, Mastering und Produktion. Außerdem verkaufe ich Musik an Unternehmen, die sie an andere für Filme/Videos/etc. weiterverkaufen.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Zuerst die Melodie, oder zuerst der Text?

Krz – Das ist bei jedem von uns anders. Ich bekomme zufällig Ideen für die Melodie und gehe dann davon aus… manchmal habe ich eine Idee für eine Basslinie, die mir gefällt. Normalerweise macht jeder von uns sein eigenes Ding und setzt ein größeres Puzzle zusammen… das macht es manchmal ein bisschen angenehmer… und schwieriger!

Brendin – Für mich mache ich immer einen sehr einfachen 4/4-Takt mit einem Kick/Snare. Dann fange ich an, Grundlinien zu schreiben. Normalerweise habe ich ein paar Variationen von Grundlinien, die alle gut zusammenpassen, und beginne, das Grundgerüst des Songs zu formulieren. Dann beginne ich mit der Arbeit an den Melodien und der weiteren Struktur. Das ist nicht immer das Gleiche. Songs schreiben sich von selbst, sage ich. Man fängt mit einer Idee an und lässt sich von der Musik in die Richtung führen, in die sie gehen soll.

Woher nimmst du deine Inspiration?

Krz – Viele Dinge. Es ist schwer, eine Sache zu nennen, die ich als “Muse” bezeichnen würde. Das Leben ist voll von Überraschungen, guten und schlechten.

Brendin – Ich glaube nicht, dass ich eine einzige Inspirationsquelle habe. Ich lasse mich von einer Vielzahl von Dingen inspirieren. Meine Erfahrungen aus der Vergangenheit, meine aktuelle Situation, das Weltgeschehen und die Prüfungen und Schwierigkeiten, die andere durchmachen.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Krz – Wir machen sie gerne beweglich. Wenn man zu viele langsame Songs ins Set einbaut, kann das den Schwung bremsen, also ist es gut, ein Gleichgewicht zwischen schnell und langsam zu haben! Außerdem mögen wir es, wenn sich die Leute bewegen!

Brendin – Krz hat das gut hinbekommen!

Was bedeutet Musik für dich?

Krz – Musik ist Leben. In jeder Art von Musik stecken so viele Emotionen.

Brendin – Musik ist für mich die Vertonung von Emotionen, die fast alle Facetten des Lebens bestimmen.

Welche Musik hörst du privat?

Krz – Alles…buchstäblich. Meine Wiedergabelisten sind sehr vielfältig. Alles von Pop über Country bis hin zu Black Metal… manchmal lasse ich es einfach laufen und die Leute denken, ich hätte den Verstand verloren… hahahah

Brendin – Ich bin in meinem Musikgeschmack auch ziemlich eklektisch. Ich höre gerne eine Menge ruhigerer Sachen. Von Pop bis hin zu fast jedem anderen Genre. Ich versuche immer, der Musik mit einem offenen Geist zu begegnen. Man weiß nie, was man von einer Musikrichtung lernen kann, mit der man sich normalerweise nicht umgibt. Aber wenn ich wirklich nur das auswählen müsste, was ich am häufigsten höre, würde das von meiner momentanen Stimmung abhängen. Im Moment höre ich viel Assemblage 23 und Neuroticfish. Aber ich mag auch alles von Social Distortion über Hatebreed bis hin zu Meg Myers (Meg Myers ist <3)

Gibt es irgendwelche musikalischen Vorbilder?

Krz – Natürlich… Ich bin ein großer Fan von älterer Industrial-Musik wie Skinny Puppy, aber ich bin auch in der Zeit des Nü-Metals aufgewachsen, also liebe ich auch Bands wie Korn, Deftones ect.

Brendin – Musik formt uns, während wir wachsen und uns als Menschen entwickeln. Ich mag vor allem Sachen mit dunklen, eingängigen Melodien. Davon abgesehen bin ich mit viel Industrial und Industrial Metal + New Wave aus den 80er und 90er Jahren aufgewachsen. Also Sachen wie Skinny Puppy, ältere KMFDM, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy. Das sind alles Grundnahrungsmittel für mich.

Krz:

• Ich spiele viel, viel zu viele Videospiele.
• Ich liebe Anime… habe ich immer und werde ich immer.
• Ich habe 2 Kinder.
• Ich bin kein großer Fan von Schokolade oder Wein.
• Whiskey ist mein Lieblingsgetränk…Jameson.

Brendin:

• Ich werde immer noch nervös, bevor ich auf die Bühne gehe – jedes. Einzelne. Mal.
• Ich bin ein Militärveteran.
• Ich habe viele Jahre lang Synthesizer in der Band BILE gespielt.
• Ich bin ein riesiger Fan von Autos, baue und repariere sie.
• Ich hatte früher zwei Tattoo-Studios und war 13 Jahre lang Piercer.

Brendin – So klischeehaft es auch klingt – ohne euch sind wir absolut nichts. Nur Leute, die Töne aufnehmen.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

I am Krz. I do the Vox and some production in Frontal Boundary. I also play electronic drums for some other projects like Dawn of Ashes, Inva//id and Bornless Fire.

I am Brendin, I play synth and do production/songwriting for Frontal Boundary. I also play synth in other projects as well such as Dawn of Ashes, INVA//ID, and Bornless Fire.

When and how did you come to music? 

Krz – I have always loved music. Grew up in the late 80’s and 90’s just listening to all sorts of stuff… Spice up your life. 😊

Brendin – I have loved music for as long as I could remember. I wanted to be a drummer at a very young age, but my family decided that a guitar would help them keep their sanity. So I’ve been playing music since I was 11.

Do you live from music full-time? If no, what is your profession?

Krz – I wish! I am a logistics and warehouse manager of a theatrical backdrop company in Los Angeles.

Brendin – Sort of. Music is my main source of income. I do a lot of production work for other bands including mixing, mastering, and producing. I also dabble in selling music to companies for re-sale to others for movies/videos/etc. 

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

Krz – It is different for all of us. I get ideas randomly with melody and then go off that… sometimes I get an idea for a bass line that I like. We are typically all doing our own thing and piecing together a larger puzzle.. sometimes that make it a bit more enjoyable..and difficult! 

Brendin – For me, I always make a very simple 4/4 beat with a kick/snare. Then I start writing baselines. I typically come out with a few variations of baselines that all work well together and start to formulate the basic backbone of the song. Then I start to work on melodies and more of the structure. This isn’t always the same. Songs write themselves, I say. You start with an idea and let the music take you in whatever direction it needs to go. 

What is your source of inspiration?

Krz – Many things. It is hard to say one thing that I would call a “muse.” Life is full of surprises, good and bad.

Brendin – I don’t think I have one source of inspiration. I draw inspiration from a myriad of things. My past experiences, my current situation, to world events and the trials and tribulations that others go through. 

According to which criteria is the setlist put together?

Krz – We like to make it moveable. Letting too many slow songs get in the set can slow the momentum so it is good to have balance of fast and slow! Plus we like to see people moving! 

Brendin – Krz nailed this one!

What does music mean to you?

Krz – Music is life. So many emotions are put into all sorts of music.

Brendin – Music is, for me, emotions put to sound which drive almost every facet of life. 

What music do you listen to privately?

Krz – Everything…literally. My playlists are all over the place. Anything from Pop to country to black metal.. sometimes I just let it go and people think I have lost my mind… hahahah

Brendin – I am pretty eclectic in my music taste as well. I enjoy listening to a lot of more mellow stuff. From pop to almost any other genre. I always try to approach music with an open mind. You never know what you can learn from a type of music you don’t normally surround yourself with. But if I have to really just pick what is played the most – it would depend on my mood at the time. Right now, I am listening to a lot of Assemblage 23 and Neuroticfish. But I also enjoy everything from Social Distortion to Hatebreed to Meg Myers (Meg Myers is <3)

Are there any musical role models?

Krz – Of course.. I am a huge fan of older industrial music like Skinny Puppy but I also grew up in the time of Nü-metal, so I also love bands like Korn, Deftones ect.

Brendin – Music shapes us as we grow and develop as humans. I really really like stuff with dark catchy melodies.  That being said, I grew up on a lot of 80’s and 90’s Industrial and Industrial Metal + New Wave. So Stuff like Skinny Puppy, older KMFDM, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy. Those are all staples for me.

Krz: 

• I play wayyyy too many video games. 
• I love anime.. always have and always will. 
• I have 2 kiddos.

Brendin:

• I still get nervous before going on stage – Every. Single. Time.
• I am a Military Veteran. 
• I played synth in the band BILE for many years.
• I am a HUGE fan of cars, building and repairing them. 
• I used to own two tattoo studios and was a body piercer for about 13 years.
