Hallo ich bin Deity von Beyond Border…ich grüße alle Schwarztour-Follower und freue mich über die Einladung zum Interview. Ich bin sowas wie der Kopf des Projektes, vielleicht weil ich der Älteste bin, vielleicht weil ich alle Lieder schreibe und BB ins Leben gerufen habe oder aber auch einfach nur, weil es gut ist, einen Kopf zu haben…aber ich habe auch Bauch…sogar ganz viel davon – LOL. Iggi hat halt die Stimme, die ich nicht habe…und aktuell unterstützt uns der KT von Diarblak/ Device Not Ready live.

Bandvorstellung

Beyond Border ist ein noch relativ neues Musikprojekt, also quasi Newcomer. Ursprünglich hieß das Profekt “Imitation Of Life” und war ein One Man Hobby von mir. Irgendwann wollte ich aber etwas mit Stimme machen und hatte ganz kurzfristig versucht selbst zu singen…ohne nennenswerten Erfolg…die Sachen hätte ich niemandem vorspielen dürfen LOL. Nachdem ich Iggi auf der Bühne mit seiner Band In Good Faith gesehen habe, wollte ich unbedingt seine warme, tiefe Stimme auf einem meiner Demos haben und sprach ihn an…so ist Beyond Border entstanden…Wir machen irgendwas zwischen Synth- und Electropop und sind immer für eingängige Melodien zu haben. Seit dem Start haben wir schon zahlreiche Singles (z.B. Constructon, What Makes The World Go Round oder Perfection) , EPs (First Contact & Love, Live And Others) und diverse Remixe gemacht, aber richtig angefangen haben wir mit unserem ´22er Album “Awakening”, welches der Startschuss der Trilogie “Welcome To The Future” darstellt. Das kommende Album “Gathering” ist damit die Fortsetzung und auch hoffentlich eine entsprechende Weiterentwicklung. Musikalisch geht die Trilogie mit dem dritten Teil “Aftermath” dann voraussichtlich in 2025 zu Ende.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Im Ursprung komme ich aus der Rockmusik und da im Speziellen aus den Sachen der späten 70er und frühen 80er. Die Achtziger im Gesamten waren für mich meine musikalische Reifungsphase und so war ich natürlich auch schon früh im Kontakt mit den damals “normalen” Bands wie Depeche Mode, The Cure oder auch The Sisters Of Mercy, um mal in der Szenemusik zu bleiben. Iggi ist ja mehr in der Technoszene behaftet, hat aber ebenso seine Wurzeln in den Achtzigern.Da war ich also mit meiner Rockmusik und wollte ein Instrument spielen und da ich eher grobmotorisch veranlagt bin, habe ich mich für das Schlagzeug entschieden und bis Ende der Neunziger eher Rock und Metal gespielt. Ende der 90er entdeckte ich Bands wie Apoptygma Berzerk und And Ond und fand in einem unserer hiesigen Clubs die szenetypischen Attribute und Kleidungsstile interessant. Der Metalszene als DJ etwas überdrüssig wechselte ich als Scheibendreher in die Schwarze Szene. Ich habe dann von 1999 bis 2005 mit zwei DJ Kumpels in einem Club die Hannover Szene aufleben lassen. Das Base, so der Name, war nicht nur wichtig für meine Entwicklung, sondern auch noch vielen anderen Szeneleuten aus Hannover…so zumindest erzählen sie es mir, wenn sie mir heute mal über den Weg laufen.Und die Zeit Anfang der 2000er war für die Elektroszene eine Bedeutende…viele der heute größten Szenebands hatten da ihren Einstand oder ihre ersten Clubhits, von denen sie noch heute zehren können und diese Art von Musik ist damit für mich wie eine schöne Gute Nacht Geschichte…eine tolle Erinnerung, von der ich viel in meine heutigen Kompositionen einfließen lasse.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Ein Song entsteht bei mir in unterschiedlicher Art und Weise…am Anfang waren es am häufigsten Versuche meine Helden von damals, wie eben Apop, VNV, Covenant oder Assemblage 23 zu huldigen…so hießen die Songs dann am Anfang auch wie Songs, an die sie mich erinnern sollten.
Dann kam die Phase, wo ich mich von einem Sound oder einem Effekt der VST (vereinfacht ein virtuelles Instrument oder Effektgerät) habe inspirieren lassen. Jetzt nehme ich Melodieideen per Summen oder Pseudosingen mit dem Handy auf oder lasse mich live bei Konzerten mitreißen und versuche zu verstehen, warum mich bestimmte Stellen auf so besondere Weise mitgenommen haben.
Wenn dann ein Song für mich quasi fertig komponiert ist, mal wieder mit viel zu vielen Melodieideen drin (Kommentar Vasi – andere Bands machen aus deiner Anzahl an Melodien in einem Song drei Lieder), dann schick ich ihn an Iggi…der sagt mir dann, ob ihm spontan was einfällt als Gesangslinie oder eben nicht. Manchmal kommt dann ein Song in einer Ordner zur Wiedervorlage (einige Lieder, die auf dem kommenden Album erscheinen, sind schon in etwas anderer Form vor 3 Jahren entstanden) oder er verschwindet in den Katakomben des Computers. Oft habe ich mit einer Piano Spur schon grob die Idee zur Gesangsmelodie mitgegeben oder Iggi singt spontan etwas drüber, was ihm einfällt.
Dann geht es in den Textbau und wir sprechen kurz über die Grundidee…meist wirft Iggi seine Inspiration aus dem Song in einen Titel und entwickelt dann eine Geschichte drumherum…dies macht die Songs aktuell und persönlich. Wenn dann diese beiden Grundideen Musik und Text stehen, dann geht es ins Finetuning, manchmal bauen wir den Song vom Ablauf nochmal um, kürzen ihn oder packen einen Part rein, um ihn abwechslungsreicher zu machen. Wenn das alles steht, geht die Musik zu Rob, um das Grundgerüst in schön zu bauen und mit der schönen Vorversion geht Iggi ins Studio, um die Sachen einzusingen…am Ende hört ihr dann das, was aus dieser ganzen Vorarbeit herausgekommen ist.
Mal dauert es 2 Tage plus Produktion, mal auch 2 bis 3 Monate. Für das kommende Album Gathering haben wir jetzt fast ein Jahr gebraucht…und es hätten auch 2 werden können, wenn wir nicht irgendwann mal vom Label gesagt bekommen hätten, dass wir abliefern müssen LOL…
wir wollten ja auch endlich was Neues rausbringen…

Was bedeutet für dich Musik?

Ich glaube das geht vielen so, die das hier lesen. Menschen, die sich einer bestimmten Szene zugehörig fühlen und die sich auch mit anderen Menschen treffen, um im Club oder auf Konzerten zu feiern, haben immer ein besonderes Gefühl für Musik. Es ist eine Art Lebenselixier. Es pusht einen, macht einen glücklich oder eben traurig. In jedem Fall ist es ein wichtiger Teil, wenn nicht für viele der wichtigste Teil im Leben. So ist Musik für mich schon immer da gewesen und wird es immer sein. Lieder katapultieren mich in die Zeit, als ich im Sommer mit meinen Eltern ins Freibad gefahren bin, ich das erste Mal mit einem Mädchen getanzt oder ich einen geliebten Menschen verloren habe. Jeder kennt diese direkte Linie zwischen Ohr und Herz. Musik ist vieles und ich glaube, das es mit dem älter werden noch viel mehr bedeutet…Zeitreise, Seelentröster und Medizin.

Was möchtest du euren Fans noch sagen?

Kommt zu unseren (und vieler Kolleg*innen) Konzerten und sprecht mit uns…was gefällt euch an Beyond Border oder eben nicht…wir machen Musik für uns und für Euch. Und ohne zu politisch zu werden, weil ich der Meinung bin, dass man musikalisch zwar durchaus politisches (Nach-)Denken anregen kann und soll, aber aufpassen muss, durch ein Übermaß an plakativen Statements nicht genau das Gegenteil zu bewirken…die Gesellschaft spaltet sich gerade sehr, die Musik sollte sie auch ein bisschen verbinden…nur wenn es einen kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenner gibt, und das könnte Musik sein, gibt es auch Hoffnung auf eine friedvollere Zukunft.

Ansonsten Danke, das es Fans gibt, die einen tragen und die einem das Gefühl geben, dass die Musik etwas bewegen kann…und natürlich geht auch der Dank an die unermüdlichen Fans der Szene, wie euch bei Schwarztour und anderen Fanzines und Radiosendern…ohne euch wäre die Szene nicht mehr präsent und am Leben.

Introduce yourself briefly

Hello I’m Deity from Beyond Border…I greet all Schwarztour-members and I’m glad to be invited for the interview. I’m kind of the head of the project, maybe because I’m the oldest, maybe because I write all the songs and started BB or maybe just because it’s good to have a head…but I also have belly…even a lot of it – LOL. Iggi just has the voice that I don’t have…and currently KT from Diarblak/ Device Not Ready supports us live.

Band introduction

Beyond Border is a relatively new music project, so quasi newcomer. Originally the project was called “Imitation Of Life” and was a one man hobby of mine. But at some point I wanted to do something with voice and had tried at very short notice to sing myself…without significant success…the things I should not have played to anyone LOL. After seeing Iggi on stage with his band In Good Faith, I really wanted to have his warm, deep voice on one of my demos and approached him…that’s how Beyond Border came into being…We do something between synth- and electropop and are always up for catchy melodies. Since the start we have already made numerous singles (e.g. Constructon, What Makes The World Go Round or Perfection) , EPs (First Contact & Love, Live And Others) and various remixes, but we really started with our ’22 album “Awakening”, which is the starting shot of the trilogy “Welcome To The Future”. The upcoming album “Gathering” is therefore the continuation and also hopefully a corresponding further development. Musically, the trilogy will probably end in 2025 with the third part “Aftermath”.

When and how did you come to music?

In the origin I come from the rock music and there in particular from the things of the late 70s and early 80s. The eighties as a whole were my musical maturation phase and so I was of course already early in contact with the then “normal” bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure or The Sisters Of Mercy, to stay in the scene music. Iggi is more in the techno scene, but also has its roots in the eighties.So there I was with my rock music and wanted to play an instrument and since I’m rather coarse, I chose the drums and played until the end of the nineties rather rock and metal. At the end of the 90s I discovered bands like Apoptygma Berzerk and And Ond and found the scene-typical attributes and clothing styles interesting in one of our local clubs. A little tired of the metal scene as a DJ, I switched to the black scene as a disc player. I then revived the Hanover scene from 1999 to 2005 with two DJ buddies in a club. The Base, so the name, was not only important for my development, but also for many other scene people from Hanover…at least that’s what they tell me when they run into me today.And the time at the beginning of the 2000s was a significant one for the electro scene…many of today’s biggest scene bands had their debut or their first club hits there, which they can still draw on today and this kind of music is therefore like a nice good night story for me…a great memory, of which I let a lot flow into my compositions today.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

A song is created in different ways for me…in the beginning it was most often attempts to pay homage to my heroes from back then, like Apop, VNV, Covenant or Assemblage 23…that’s how the songs were called in the beginning, like songs they should remind me of.
Then came the phase where I got inspired by a sound or an effect of the VST (simplified a virtual instrument or effect device). Now I record melody ideas by humming or pseudo-singing with my phone, or get carried away live at concerts and try to understand why certain parts took me away in such a special way.
When a song is almost finished for me, once again with way too many melody ideas in it (comment Vasi – other bands make three songs out of your number of melodies in one song), then I send it to Iggi…who then tells me whether he spontaneously comes up with something as a vocal line or not. Sometimes a song ends up in a folder for resubmission (some songs that will appear on the upcoming album were already written in a slightly different form 3 years ago) or it disappears into the catacombs of the computer. Often I have already roughly given the idea for the vocal melody with a piano track or Iggi spontaneously sings something over it that occurs to him.
Then it goes into the text construction and we talk briefly about the basic idea…usually Iggi throws his inspiration from the song into a title and then develops a story around it…this makes the songs current and personal. When the two basic ideas music and lyrics are set, then it goes into the fine tuning, sometimes we rebuild the song from the flow again, shorten it or put a part in it to make it more varied. When all that is done, the music goes to Rob to build the basic framework in a nice way and with the nice preliminary version Iggi goes into the studio to sing the stuff…in the end you will hear what came out of all this preliminary work.
Sometimes it takes 2 days plus production, sometimes 2 to 3 months. For the upcoming album Gathering it took us almost a year…and it could have been 2 if we hadn’t been told by the label that we had to deliver LOL….
we wanted to finally release something new…

What does music mean to you?

I think it’s the same for many people reading this. People who feel they belong to a certain scene and who also meet other people to party in the club or at concerts always have a special feeling for music. It’s a kind of elixir of life. It pushes you, makes you happy or sad. In any case, it’s an important part, if not for many the most important part in life. So music has always been there for me and always will be. Songs catapult me to the time when I went to the outdoor pool with my parents in the summer, when I danced with a girl for the first time or when I lost a loved one. Everyone knows that direct line between ear and heart. Music is many things and I believe that as we get older it means much more…time travel, soul comforter and medicine.

What else would you like to say to your fans?

Come to our (and many colleagues’) concerts and talk to us…what do you like about Beyond Border or not…we make music for us and for you. And without getting too political, because I think that you can and should inspire political thinking musically, but you have to be careful not to cause the opposite by an excess of striking statements…society is splitting right now, music should unite them a bit…only if there is a lowest common denominator, and that could be music, there is hope for a more peaceful future.

Otherwise, thank you that there are fans who carry you and who give you the feeling that music can move something…and of course, thanks also go to the tireless fans of the scene, like you at Schwarztour and other fanzines and radio stations…without you, the scene would no longer be present and alive.

Our first single “Radiant” from the upcoming album was released on 06.10. and the follow-up single “Journey” will be released on 03.11.! Until the release of “Gathering” at the end of January ’24 two more singles will be released.

Concert dates

IN this year we still have 2 dates…once in Derenburg on the Black Castle Night on 11.11. and then on the Dark Electro Festival with Alienare, Scheuber and Readjust on 25.11. in Bielefeld.
