STAHLSCHLAG ist ein Electro Industrial Noise Projekt aus Hamburg und besteht aus mir, Sebastian. Die Musik ist geprägt von Einflüssen aus post-industriellen Genres wie Dark Electro, Techno Body Music und Electro-Industrial, gemischt mit Oldschool-Sound-Einflüssen und Ambient-Stücken und repräsentiert somit ein breites Spektrum an dunkler elektronischer Musik.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Das ist schon sehr lange bei mir her. Durch einen Zufall bin ich 1998 mit einer Musik-Software in Berührung gekommen, die mich fasziniert hat. Dabei handelte es sich um einen sogenannten Tracker, der es ermöglicht auf Basis von Samples eigene Musik zu produzieren. Dann nach dem ersten Herumprobieren kamen erste Tracks im Bereich Dark Electro heraus. 2006 dann hatte meine Frau die Idee mit STAHLSCHLAG, da sie gerne selbst Musik im Bereich Industrial Noise produzieren wollte. Jetzt mache ich seit 2009 alleine Musik und habe mittlerweile auch insgesamt vier Projekte, um meine verschiedenen Vorlieben unterzubringen: STAHLSCHLAG, Fundustrial, In Tenebris und 2050AD.

Lebst du von der Musik hauptberuflich? Wenn Nein, welchen Beruf übst du aus?

Ich bin hauptberuflich als Wissenschaftler und Software-Entwickler an einer Hochschule angestellt.
Selbst wenn ich es mir aussuchen könnte, würde ich niemals von der Musik leben wollen. Ich sehe die Musik als Ausgleich und Leidenschaft. Dies würde mir verloren gehen, wenn ich Musik als Beruf ergreifen würde.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Ich arbeite eher selten mit Texten, und wenn Texte dazukommen, dann eher von Künstlern, mit denen ich zusammenarbeite. In letzter Zeit waren das Mikrometrik, Morbid Echo, Sublimenal Stimuli, Ultra und Bow Ever Down. Fast alles, was ich produziere, ist nur instrumental. Dabei gibt es keine Standardvorgehensweise, wie ein Track entsteht. Vieles kommt einfach aus dem Bauch heraus

Was ist deine Inspirationsquelle?

Ich habe so viele Inspirationsquellen, aber am Ende dreht es sich fast immer, um die Menschheit und wie ich mich damit fühle, was in der Welt so passiert. Inspiriert werde ich z. B. durch das Weltgeschehen, persönliche Erfahrungen mit anderen Menschen, aus Gesprächen, aber auch durch Szenen in Filmen oder Hörspielen. Dadurch kommen immer wieder Ideen auf, die ich dann musikalisch umsetze.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Das ist eigentlich ganz einfach. Tanzbarkeit steht bei mir an erster Stelle und ich versuche immer eine Mischung aus alten und neuen Tracks. Eine Sache bleibt bei jedem Set gleich. Ich spiele Hidden Path immer als letzten Track, da dieser mir sogar selbst Gänsehaut beschert.

Was bedeutet für dich Musik?

Musik ist für mich einer der wichtigsten Faktoren im Leben, egal ob ich konsumiere oder produziere. Ich liebe es einfach Musik zu fühlen und habe meine Leidenschaft für „dunkle“ Musik schon vor langer Zeit entdeckt. Künstler in diesem Bereich schaffen es oft auszudrücken, was ich fühle.

Welche Musik hörst du privat?

So ziemlich alles an dunkler elektronischer Musik. Von Industrial, EBM, Aggrotech, Synthpop und Future Pop. Ich habe aber auch eine große Leidenschaft für Hörspiele aller Art. Das ist eine richtige Sucht bei mir.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Zu Beginn waren meine Inspirationsquellen xotox und KiEW. Diese Künstler haben mir sehr dabei geholfen einen Zugang zu der Musik zu finden, die ich auch heute noch produziere. Mittlerweile bin ich selbst so lange dabei, dass ich keine aktuellen Vorbilder mehr habe, ich produziere einfach vor mir her. Allerdings kann ich nur sagen, dass es einfach toll zu sehen ist, wie viele neue Künstler aufkommen und auch zu sehen, dass in der stark von Männern dominierten Szene sich endlich mehr weibliche Künstler durchsetzen, z. B. im Bereich Rhythmic Noise und Industrial Strobo.Lolita und [Sinergy]Cdio.

Fünf Fakten über dich

• Ich bin eher introvertiert und zurückhaltend, liebe es aber, auf einer Bühne zu sein und vor Publikum zu sprechen.Ich bin ein totaler Hörspielfan, schon seit meiner Kindheit.

• Ich habe eine Leidenschaft für Wrestling.

• Ich mochte Industrial Noise überhaupt nicht, als ich mit STAHLSCHLAG angefangen habe.

• Am besten gefällt mir am Musikmachen, dass ich sehr tolle Leute darüber kennenlernen durfte und dabei schon viele wunderbare Kooperationen entstanden sind.

Was möchtest du deinen Fans noch sagen?

Ich bin wirklich sehr sehr dankbar, dass es Menschen dort draußen gibt, die zu schätzen wissen, was ich tue. Jeder, der seine oder ihre Zeit damit verbringt, meiner Musik zu lauschen, ist einfach goldwert. Danke auch für die tollen Gespräche und die Zusammenarbeit, die nur daraus entstanden ist, dass ich Krach mache. Aktuelle News / Konzertdaten / Infos

Momentan wird ein Festival in Hamburg im März vorbereitet, auf dem ich spielen werde. Zum ersten Mal dann auch mit Musik von Fundustrial. Ich arbeite auch gerade an einem neuen STAHLSCHLAG Album, das ich im Frühjahr veröffentlichen möchte. Es wird etwas mystischer als sonst und soll auch als CD kommen.

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

STAHLSCHLAG is an Electro Industrial Noise project from Hamburg and consists of me, Sebastian. The music is characterized by influences from post-industrial genres like Dark Electro, Techno Body Music and Electro-Industrial, mixed with oldschool sound influences and ambient pieces and thus represents a wide spectrum of dark electronic music.

When and how did you / you come to music?

That was a very long time ago for me. By chance I came into contact with a music software in 1998, which fascinated me. It was a so-called tracker, which allows you to produce your own music based on samples. Then after the first trial and error, the first tracks in the area of Dark Electro came out. Then in 2006 my wife had the idea with STAHLSCHLAG, because she wanted to produce music in the area of Industrial Noise. Now I’m making music on my own since 2009 and in the meantime I have four projects to accommodate my different preferences: STAHLSCHLAG, Fundustrial, In Tenebris and 2050AD.

Do you live from music full-time? If no, what is your profession?

I am employed full-time as a scientist and software developer at a university. Even if I could choose it, I would never want to live from music. I see music as a balance and a passion. This would be lost to me if I took up music as a profession.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

I rarely work with lyrics, and when I do, it’s more from artists I collaborate with. Lately that’s been Mikrometrik, Morbid Echo, Sublimenal Stimuli, Ultra and Bow Ever Down. Almost everything I produce is instrumental. There is no standard procedure for how a track is created. A lot of it just comes from the gut.

What is your source of inspiration?

I have so many sources of inspiration, but in the end it almost always revolves around humanity and how I feel about what’s happening in the world. I am inspired, for example, by world events, personal experiences with other people, from conversations, but also by scenes in movies or radio plays. This always gives me ideas, which I then implement musically.

According to which criteria is the setlist put together?

That’s actually quite simple. Danceability is my number one priority and I always try to have a mix of old and new tracks. One thing remains the same in every set. I always play Hidden Path as the last track because it even gives me goosebumps myself.

What does music mean to you?

Music is one of the most important factors in my life, whether I consume or produce. I just love to feel music and discovered my passion for “dark” music a long time ago. Artists in this field often manage to express what I feel.

What music do you listen to privately?

Pretty much everything in dark electronic music. From industrial, EBM, aggrotech, synthpop and future pop. But I also have a great passion for radio plays of all kinds. That’s a real addiction with me.

Are there any musical role models?

In the beginning my sources of inspiration were xotox and KiEW. These artists helped me a lot to find an approach to the music that I still produce today. In the meantime I’ve been doing it myself for so long that I don’t have any current role models anymore, I just produce in front of myself. However, I can only say that it’s just great to see how many new artists are emerging and also to see that in the heavily male-dominated scene more female artists are finally asserting themselves, e.g. in the field of rhythmic noise and industrial strobo.Lolita and [Sinergy]Cdio.

Five facts about you

• I’m rather introverted and reserved, but love being on a stage and speaking in front of an audience.

• I’m a total radio drama fan, have been since I was a kid.

• I have a passion for wrestling.

• I didn’t like industrial noise at all when I started STAHLSCHLAG.

• My favorite thing about making music is that I’ve been able to meet very great people through it and many wonderful collaborations have already come about.

What else would you like to tell your fans?

I’m really very very grateful that there are people out there who appreciate what I do. Anyone who spends his or her time listening to my music is just golden. At the moment a festival is being prepared in Hamburg in March, where I will play. For the first time then also with music from Fundustrial. I’m also working on a new STAHLSCHLAG album, which I want to release in spring. It will be a bit more mystical than usual and should also come as a CD.
