Hallo, ich bin André und heute hier stellvertretend für meine Band VERSUS.

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?

Das ist schon sehr lange her. Ich habe genau genommen bereits in der Schule Musik gemacht, obwohl man das vermutlich nicht so bezeichnen konnte. Rico, ein Freund von mir hat auf dem Amiga500 Beats gebaut, ich habe dazu gesungen oder gerappt, sofern man das so nennen mochte. Ich hatte damals aber auch verdammt viel zu erzählen und anzuprangern. Zum Beispiel hatte unser damaliger Schuldirektor meine beste Freundin angeschwärzt, weil sie in der Hofpause mit nem Typen von zwei Klassen über uns rumgeknutscht hat. „In der Schule küssen“ war geboren. Diesen Track, einige Mixe von mir – ich habe immer mit Bleistift und nem Doppeldeck-Kassettenrekorder Extended-Mixe und Bastard-Mixe erstellt – landeten dann auf unserem Mixtape unter dem Projektnamen „The Better Feeling“. 

Rico hatte dann irgendwann mit anderen Freunden eine CD gemacht und ich habe bei einem Song den Text geschrieben und gesungen. Das war für mich ein echtes Highlight. Wir reden hier von Anfang der 90er Jahre, ich war kaum 15 und hatte einen „eigenen“ Song. 

Mit einigen der Jungs habe ich auch heute noch sporadisch Kontakt.

Etwas ernster wurde es dann mit Marco, später unser Live-Gitarrist, welcher ebenfalls am Amiga 500 in einem Trackerprogramm Songs produzierte. Irgendwie ging das auch musikalisch eher dahin wo ich irgendwie damals hinwollte. Ich schrieb massenhaft Texte für meine imaginäre Band „str@nge ARTS“ und wurde irgendwann das erste Mal enttäuscht, als Marco meinte nie eine Band gründen zu wollen. Das brach mir damals das Herz, wenngleich ich Marco damals wie auch heute noch immer zu meinen besten Freunden zählte.

Eines Tages – 2001 – stand ich dann vor einem Supermarkt, traf mit Steffen einen alten Freund aus Schultagen wieder, entsann mich das er schon seit Ewigkeiten all mein Depeche Mode CD´s ausgeliehen hatte und forderte sie einfach mal wieder ein. Im Gegenzug gab ich ihm Alben von Covenant, VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, And One und Delay in die Hand. Er war begeistert und zwei oder drei Tage später gründeten wir VERSUS. Wir holten uns vorher noch zwei Freunde uns Boot, weil sie die Bands ebenfalls mochten.

Im Mai 2002 sollte ich bei meinen Freunden von Days Of Fate auf deren Releaseparty zu einer Single als DJ durch den Abend führen. Irgendwann im März – während eines Heimspiels der SG Dynamo Dresden – meinten Dirk und René (Days Of Fate) zu mir, dass sie einen anderen DJ für den Abend organisiert hätten, weil meine Band und ich das erste Konzert bei ihnen als Gäste spielen sollten. Klingt insofern gut, wenn man denn einen Song hätte. Wir hatten zum damaligen Zeitpunkt an Songs genau genommen: Null.

Innerhalb von zwei Monaten schrieben und produzierten wir unser erstes Album und verkauften über 200 Tickets für diesen Abend. Das war schon ein grandioses Gefühl, auch wenn es – im Nachhinein betrachtet – musikalisch eher semi war. Dennoch spielten wir von da an im Jahr 2002 noch gefühlt unendlich viele Konzerte (über 20 Konzerte waren es bestimmt), was uns – oder besser gesagt mich – auch ein wenig abheben ließ. Aber das ist wieder eine andere Geschichte, aus der ich super gut gelernt habe und aufgrund der damals gemachten Erfahrungen VERSUS auch jetzt irgendwie das sind, was sie – abseits der Musik – sind, zumindest behaupte ich, dass wir mittlerweile eine sehr umgängliche und zuvorkommende Band sind. Das war nicht immer so.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

Das kann ich gar nicht so pauschal sagen. Oft läuft Beides unabhängig voneinander und fügt sich irgendwann zusammen. Oftmals habe ich aber eine musikalische Skizze und es ergibt sich aus welchen Gedanken auch immer ein Textfragment oder ein Wortfetzen, welcher die Stimmung der Skizze für mein Empfinden in dem Moment am besten widerspiegelt. Wenn das passt, schreibe ich weiter. Wenn nicht, verwerfe ich auch ganz schnell … manchmal Text, manchmal Musik, manchmal auch Beides. Es kommt aber auch vor, dass ich einen Text schreibe und mich erst später um die Musik kümmere. Das ist aber eher selten der Fall, weil es der für mich schwierigere Weg ist. Ich muss bei der Musik kompromissbereiter sein als anders herum, weil ich ungern an einem fertigen Text etwas ändere. Ich habe den Text irgendwann einmal geschrieben, weil ich ihn genauso geschrieben habe. Ihn irgendwann zu ändern nimmt oftmals etwas von seiner Authentizität. 

Unsere  erste Vorab-Single „Ich bin“ war anfangs nur als Gedicht geschrieben. Aber ich fand dieses Gedicht irgendwann zu gut, um es als Gedicht versauern zu lassen. Ich sah in VERSUS viel mehr Möglichkeiten, das Geschriebene nach Außen zu tragen. Wider Erwarten fiel es mir sehr leicht, die musikalische Seite des Tracks zu schreiben, indem ich die Skizze bewusst minimal und technoid hielt. Obwohl ich wusste, dass dies musikalisch etwas aus der Reihe tanzt, zu dem was wir bis dahin für unser neues Album geschrieben hatten, war es vom Gefühl her trotzdem genau richtig und wir wussten alle sehr zeitig: Das muss die erste Single werden. Krischan als Produzent und auch Trisol haben uns später darin auch bestärkt.

Was bedeutet für euch Musik?

Alles. Ich glaube das trifft es am Besten. Ich glaube Musik kann mehr Gefühle in kurzer Zeit erschaffen und beibehalten, als es die Liebe vermutlich je imstande sein wird.

Introduce yourself briefly / Band introduction

Hello, I’m André and today I’m here representing my band VERSUS.

When and how did you get into music?

That was a very long time ago. Actually, I already made music in school, although you probably couldn’t call it that. Rico, a friend of mine built beats on the Amiga500, I sang or rapped to it, if you wanted to call it that. At that time I also had a lot to tell and to denounce. For example, our school principal at the time had blackballed my best friend because she was making out with a guy from two classes above us during recess. “Kissing at school” was born. This track, some mixes of mine – I always created extended mixes and bastard mixes with a pencil and a double deck cassette recorder – ended up on our mixtape under the project name “The Better Feeling”.

Rico had then at some point made a CD with other friends and I wrote the lyrics and sang on one song. That was a real highlight for me. We are talking about the beginning of the 90s, I was barely 15 and had an “own” song.

I still have sporadic contact with some of the guys today.

Things got a bit more serious with Marco, later our live guitarist, who also produced songs on the Amiga 500 in a tracker program. Somehow this also went musically rather where I wanted to go at that time. I wrote a lot of lyrics for my imaginary band “str@nge ARTS” and was disappointed for the first time when Marco said he never wanted to start a band. That broke my heart, even though I still counted Marco among my best friends.

One day – 2001 – I was standing in front of a supermarket, met Steffen, an old friend from school days, remembered that he had borrowed all my Depeche Mode CD’s for ages and just asked for them again. In return I gave him albums by Covenant, VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, And One and Delay. He was thrilled and two or three days later we founded VERSUS. Before that we got two friends on board, because they liked the bands as well.

In May 2002 I was supposed to DJ at my friends Days Of Fate’s release party for a single. Sometime in March – during a home game of SG Dynamo Dresden – Dirk and René (Days Of Fate) told me that they had organized another DJ for the evening, because my band and I should play the first concert at their place as guests. Sounds good in that respect, if you had a song. We had at that time at songs exactly: Zero.

Within two months we wrote and produced our first album and sold over 200 tickets for that night. That was a great feeling, even if it was – in retrospect – musically rather semi. Nevertheless, from then on in 2002 we played a seemingly endless number of concerts (more than 20 concerts for sure), which made us – or rather me – take off a bit. But that’s another story again, from which I learned super well and because of the experiences made back then VERSUS are now somehow what they are – apart from the music – at least I claim that we are a very affable and accommodating band by now. That was not always the case.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

I can’t say that across the board. Often both run independently of each other and come together at some point. Often, however, I have a musical sketch and a fragment of a lyric or a snippet of a word emerges from whatever thoughts I have, which best reflects the mood of the sketch for me at that moment. If that fits, I continue writing. If not, I quickly discard … sometimes text, sometimes music, sometimes both. But it also happens that I write a text and only later take care of the music. But that’s rarely the case, because it’s the more difficult way for me. I have to be more willing to compromise on the music than the other way around, because I don’t like to change anything in a finished text. I wrote the lyrics at some point because that’s the way I wrote them. Changing it at some point often takes away some of its authenticity.

Our first pre-release single, “I Am,” was written as a poem at first. But I thought this poem was too good at some point to let it go stale as a poem. I saw much more possibilities in VERSUS to bring what I had written to the outside world. Contrary to expectations, I found it very easy to write the musical side of the track, deliberately keeping the sketch minimal and technoid. Although I knew that musically this was a bit out of line with what we had written for our new album up to that point, it still felt just right and we all knew very early on: this has to be the first single. Krischan as producer and also Trisol later encouraged us in this.

What does music mean to you?

Everything. I think that sums it up best. I think music can create and keep more feelings in a short time than love will probably ever be able to.
