Interview: SETYØURSAILS

Ein Interview mit Nicolai Hoch, Bassist der Kölner Band SETYØURSAILS.
(Ich hatte wirklich viel Spaß, Nicolai hat sich nämlich die Zeit für eine Videokonferenz genommen.

SETYØURSAILS gibt es seit 2017. Die Band wurde von der Sängerin Jules und Gitarristen André gegründet. Musikalisch ordnet sich die Band eher dem Matelcore ein. Musikalisch lassen sie sich jedoch ungern in eine Schublade stecken.

Wie entsteht bei euch ein Song?

Oftmals ist es so, dass Jules eine Idee hat für einen Chorus bzw. eine Melodie im Kopf hat.
Entweder schickt sie das dann an uns oder macht das dann selber fertig.
Für die Demos sind wir alle in der Lage, jedes Instrument hinzubekommen.
Wir arbeiten zusammen als Gruppe an dem Song. Wir schauen dann, in welche Richtung sich der Song tragen lässt oder in welche Richtung der Song uns vielleicht auch trägt.
Aber das ist auch bei unseren Videos so 😉

Welche Musik hört ihr privat?

Andre hört viel in die Techno-Richtung. Henrik hört viel Deathmetal. Nicolai verrät selbst, dass er gern auch Mainstream hört und eine absolute Schwäche für Taylor Swift hat. Er selbst möchte unbedingt die Tour von Taylor Swift erleben.

Wie läuft das auf Touren? Reist ihr zusammen? oder eher alleine?

Ich reise von Freiburg mit dem Zug nach Köln oder bis zur Location, je nach dem wie das Sinn ergibt.
Die anderen starten dann ab Köln mit dem Tour-Bus.
Unser Mischer, Merch, Licht und alles was dazu gehört, kommt entweder unterwegs in den Bus oder direkt von Köln mit.

Wie geht ihr mit den vielen Reisen um?

Wir fahren halt die Strecken und jedes Mal wartet am Ende des Regenbogens ein Topf voll Gold, weil da Leute sind, die deine Musik hören und dich live sehen wollen. Die Emotionalität, die einige Menschen damit verbinden und ich meine, das ist doch irgendwie, das Schönste, was man machen kann.
Dann ist jede Anfahrt egal, egal wie lange sie auch ist.

Welche Taktiken habt ihr, um während er Tour die Stimmung harmonisch zu behalten?

Konflikte immer offen ansprechen, einander Freiräume geben, aufeinander acht geben und vor allem auch auf sich acht geben. Ebenso ist es wichtig, sich mitzuteilen.

Eine Tour ist nicht nur toll, was sind die Nachteile einer Tour?

Du bist ganz viel von Zuhause weg, genauso bekommst du nicht viel von dem Leben deiner Freunde, Partner, Familie usw. mit. Du lebst teilweise in so einer Parallelwelt, nach der Tour musst du dich erstmal updaten mit allen wie z. B. Ereignisse etc. Und natürlich zerrt das auch einem.
Man hat auch Momente, wo man down ist.

Post Festival/Konzert Depression, das Gefühl nach der Show

Der harte Kontrast zwischen Show mit wahnsinnig vielen Menschen. All diese Leute kennen deinen Namen oder den Namen deiner Band. Die Leute singen die Songs mit und dann ist da niemand da, niemand schert sich um dich.
In einem Moment ist man begehrt und im nächsten Moment liegst du da alleine und bist völlig im Arsch.

Was möchtet ihr euren Fans noch sagen?

Unterstützt alle Bands, die ihr mögt, geht auf Konzerte, kauft weiterhin CD’s, kauft Merch.
Habt eine gute Zeit. Sagt und schreibt es den Bands auch gerne.
Vielen Dank auch an jede Person, die uns in den letzten Jahren live gesehen hat, die auf den Shows war.

An interview with Nicolai Hoch, bassist of the Cologne band SETYØURSAILS.
(I really had a lot of fun, Nicolai took the time for a video conference.

SETYØURSAILS has been around since 2017 and was founded by singer Jules and guitarist André. Musically, the band is more of a matelcore band. Musically, however, they don’t like to be pigeonholed.

How do you create a song?

It’s often the case that Jules has an idea for a chorus or a melody in her head.
She either sends it to us or finishes it herself.
For the demos, we are all able to get every instrument right.
We work on the song together as a group. We then see in which direction the song can be carried or in which direction the song might carry us.
But that’s also the case with our videos 😉

What music do you listen to in your private life?

Andre listens to a lot of techno. Henrik listens to a lot of death metal. Nicolai himself reveals that he also likes to listen to mainstream music and has an absolute weakness for Taylor Swift. He himself really wants to experience Taylor Swift’s tour.

How does it work on tour? Are you traveling together or alone?

I travel from Freiburg to Cologne by train or to the location, depending on what makes sense.
The others then take the tour bus from Cologne.
Our mixer, merch, lighting and everything that goes with it either comes on the bus on the way or directly from Cologne.

How do you deal with all the traveling?

We just drive the routes and every time there’s a pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow because there are people there who want to hear your music and see you live. The emotionality that some people associate with it and I think that’s kind of the best thing you can do.
Then every journey doesn’t matter, no matter how long it is.

What tactics do you use to keep the atmosphere harmonious during the tour?

Always address conflicts openly, give each other space, look after each other and, above all, look after yourselves. It’s also important to communicate with each other.

A tour is not just great, what are the disadvantages of a tour?

You’re away from home a lot, and you don’t get to see much of the lives of your friends, partners, family etc. either. You partly live in a parallel world, after the tour you have to update yourself with everything, e.g. events, etc. And of course that pulls on you. And, of course, that also drains you.
You also have moments when you’re down.

Post-festival/concert depression, the feeling after the show

The stark contrast between a show with an incredible number of people. All these people know your name or the name of your band. People are singing along to the songs and then there’s nobody there, nobody cares about you.
One moment you’re in demand and the next moment you’re lying there alone and completely fucked.

What else would you like to say to your fans?

Support all the bands you like, go to concerts, keep buying CDs, buy merch.
Have a good time. Tell and write to the bands too.
