Interview: YUZNA

Stellen Sie sich kurz vor / Bandvorstellung

Hallo, wir sind YUZNA, ein Elektropunk, Darkpop, Industrial Projekt aus der nebligen und deprimierenden Stadt Alessandra (Italien). Ich bin Mers (Bassist/Gitarrist/Synthesizer-Programmierer) und mit mir Simon (Gitarren, Technik, Programmierung) und Marika (Gesang).

Wann und wie seid ihr zur Musik gekommen?

YUZNA wurde 2016 von mir und Simon gegründet. Ich hatte ein paar Songs geschrieben und Simon (der nicht nur Gitarrist ist) ist auch ein großartiger Tontechniker und Mixer, also wollten wir ein Industrial-ähnliches Projekt machen, aber mit einem eher punkigen/indie/alternativen Sound. Zu der Zeit hatten wir noch keinen offiziellen Sänger, also haben wir, nachdem wir alle Songs unserer ersten EP (V.A.M.P.Y.R.) geschrieben und produziert hatten, eine externe Sängerin (Elasi) engagiert, um die Vocals aufzunehmen. Dann, nachdem wir bei DarkTunes unterschrieben und die EP 2017 veröffentlicht hatten, begannen wir mit der Arbeit am neuen Material und der Suche nach einem offiziellen Sänger. Es waren wirklich harte Jahre, voller Verzögerungen, Sängerinnen-Auditions, erneuter Verzögerungen, dem Aufkommen von Covid, aber wir hielten durch und schließlich, im Oktober 2022, wie ein Geschenk des Himmels, fanden wir endlich die perfekte Sängerin: Marika trat der Band als unsere offizielle Sängerin bei. Es fühlte sich an, als wäre das Projekt zum ersten Mal komplett und wir konnten die Platte fertigstellen.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Zuerst die Melodie, oder zuerst der Text?

Das kann auf viele Arten geschehen. Manchmal zuerst die Melodie, manchmal zuerst der Text. Und manchmal zuerst der Titel. Mit einem Titel anzufangen, kann eine interessante und inspirierende Art sein, einen Weg zu finden, dem man folgen kann. Le Vampire und Queen of the Eels wurden auf diese Weise geschrieben.

Was ist eure Inspirationsquelle?

Manchmal politische/gesellschaftliche Themen, manchmal menschliche Dinge. Bei V.A.M.P.Y.R. ging es mehr um Ersteres. Themen wie Bullismus (Witch Sister), Misogynie (Medusa Nervous Breakdown) und andere soziale Themen, die uns am Herzen liegen. All Your Love Ain’t Worth A Penny ist persönlicher, es geht um verschiedene Gesichter der Dunkelheit und Sexualität. Like Supermaniac handelt von der Entstehung einer Domina, She-H von Nymphomanie und Stinky Fingers von Adrenalin, Depression und Sexsucht.

Nach welchen Kriterien wird die Setlist zusammengestellt?

Wir mögen Alben, bei denen die Songs sehr unterschiedlich sein können. So kann man von einem schnellen, kurzen, aggressiven Song zu einem groovigen Elektro-Song wechseln. Wir wollen keine Alben machen, auf denen alle Songs die gleiche Stimmung haben.

Was bedeutet Musik für euch?

Musik ist das, was uns schon so oft das Leben gerettet hat und es immer noch tut.

Welche Musik hörst du privat?

Meine persönlichen Musikvorlieben reichen von klassischem Industrial wie Ministry, NIN, KMFDM und Rob Zombie über Alternative Rock wie PJ Harvey, St. Vincent oder Soundgarden bis hin zu Synthpop-Künstlern wie Eurythmics, Madonna, Molly Nilsson oder Billie Eilish.

Simon steht mehr auf Indie-, Punk- und Psych-Rock-Künstler wie Osees, Sleighbells oder die australischen King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, während Marika sich ganz dem Punk-Rock verschrieben hat, von Klassikern bis hin zu brandneuen Songs.

Gibt es musikalische Vorbilder?

Ich persönlich mag Künstler und Bands, die ihr Privatleben privat halten. Alle meine musikalischen Vorbilder hatten eine Art Geheimnis um sich herum und das hat mir gefallen. Die sozialen Netzwerke haben das irgendwie umgekehrt und jetzt wollen die Leute alles über ihre Idole wissen/sehen. Von ihrem Frühstück bis zu dem Moment, in dem sie auf die Toilette gehen. Ich denke, das ist irgendwie giftig und tötet auch viel von der Magie.

Fünf Fakten über euch

1) Wir sind Antifa, Marxisten und stehen der Igbtq+ Bewegung und der Tierrechtsbewegung sehr nahe.

2) Wir lieben Horrorfilme und haben einmal pro Woche einen gemeinsamen Horrorfilmabend, den wir “The Vision” nennen.

3) Wir sind eher Indie-/Punk-Leute als Metal-/Gothic-Leute, also waren wir etwas überrascht, als DarkTunes uns einen Vertrag angeboten hat, ahah. Aber wir sind froh, dass sie uns unter Vertrag genommen haben, weil es ein tolles Label ist!

4) Le Vampire, unser erstes Video von der ersten EP, ist immer noch der einzige Song, der italienische Texte enthält.

5) Der Name der Band ist eine Hommage an den Regisseur Brian Yuzna. Er ist eines der einzigartigsten Beispiele für soziale und politische Satire gemischt mit Horror.

Was möchtet ihr euren Fans noch sagen?

Ich denke, alle Musikfans im Allgemeinen sollten sich der Tatsache bewusst sein, dass Streaming-Dienste (wie Spotify) den Künstlern nichts zahlen. Wir sind nicht gegen Streaming-Dienste, wir sind nur Teil der Bewegung, die denkt, dass sie den Künstlern das zahlen sollten, was sie verdienen. Wenn du also ein Musikfan bist und die Bands, die du liebst, unterstützen willst, kannst du das auf folgende Weise tun: Konzerte, physische Kopien und Merch.

Wir haben bereits mit der Arbeit an neuem Material begonnen und wir haben wirklich heiße Sachen in der Mache. Wir wollen nicht zweimal dasselbe Album machen, also wird unser nächstes Album sicherlich anders klingen als dieses, so wie dieses ziemlich anders klingt als das erste. Bleibt dran!

Introduce yourself briefly / band introduction

Hi we’re YUZNA, an electropunk, darkpop, industrial project from the foggy and depressing city of Alessandra (Italy). I’m Mers (bassist/guitarist/synthprogrammer) and here’s with me Simon (guitars, engineering, programming) and Marika (vocals).

When and how did you come to music?

YUZNA was founded in 2016 by me and Simon. I had written some songs and Simon (other than a guitarist) is also a great engineer and mixer, so we wanted to make an industrial like project but with a more punk/indie/alternative sound. At the time we didn’t have an official singer yet so after we finished writing and producing all the songs of our first EP (V.A.M.P.Y.R.) we used an external singer (Elasi) to record the vocals. Then, after we signed with DarkTunes and release the EP in 2017 we started working on the new material and searching for an official singer. They were really tough years, full of delays, singers auditions, delays again, advent of covid, but we held on and finally, in october 2022, as a gifth from heaven, we finally found the perfect one: Marika joined the band as our official singer. It felt like the project was complete for the first time and and we fucking got to finish the record. 

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

It can be many ways. Sometimes first the melody, sometimes first the lyrics. And sometimes first the title. Starting with just a title can be an interesting and inspiring way to set a path to follow. Le Vampire and Queen of the Eels were written this way.

What is your source of inspiration?

Sometimes political/social issues, sometimes human things. V.A.M.P.Y.R. was more about the first. Themes like bullism (Witch Sister), misoginy (Medusa Nervous Breakdown) and other social issues we care about. All Your Love Ain’t Worth A Penny is more personal, about different faces of darkness and sexuality. Like Supermaniac is about the genesis of a dominatrix, She-H about nymphomania and Stinky Fingers about adrenalin, depression and sex addiction.

According to which criteria is the setlist put together?

We like albums where songs can be very different from each others. So you can go from a fast short aggressive one to a groovy electro one. We don’t wanna make albums where songs have all the same mood.

What does music mean to you?

Music is the thing that saved our life so many times and still keeps doing it.

What music do you listen to privately?

My personal music likes go from classic industrial Ministry, NIN, KMFDM and Rob Zombie to alternative rock like PJ Harvey, St.Vincent or Soundgarden to synthpop artists like Eurythmics, Madonna, Molly Nilsson or Billie Eilish.

Simon is more into indie, punk e psych rock artists like Osees, Sleighbells or the australian King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard while Marika is all about punk rock, from classic to brand new one.

Are there any musical role models?

I personally like artists and bands who keep their personal life private. All of my music idols had a sort of mystery around them and I loved that. Social networks kinda reversed this and now people wanna know/see everything about their idols. From their breakfast to the moment they go to the toilette. I think it’s kinda toxic and also kills lot of the magic. 

Five facts about you

1) We’re antifa, marxist and very close to lgbtq+ movements and animal rights movements.

2) We love horror movies and once a week we have a horror movie night together we call “The Vision”.

3) We’re more indie/punk people than metal/gothic ones so when DarkTunes offered us a contract we were a bit surprised ahah. But we’re glad they signed us cause it’s a great label!

4) Le Vampire, our first video from the first EP, is still the only song that contains  italian lyrics.

5) Band’s name is a tribute to the director Brian Yuzna. One of the most unique example of social/political satire mixed with horror.

What else would you like to tell your fans?

I think all music fans in general should be aware of the fact that streaming services (like Spotify) aren’t paying shit to artists. We’re not against streaming services, we are just part of the movement that thinks they should pay artists what they deserve. So, if you’re a music fan and you wanna support the bands you love, the ways to do it are: concerts, physical copies and merch.

We’re already started working on new material and we have really hot stuff in the making. We don’t wanna do the same album twice so our next album will surely sound different than this one, as this one sounds pretty different from the first one. Stay tuned!
