Interview – J:dead

Mein Name ist Jay Taylor und ich bin der Schöpfer hinter J:dead. J:dead ist mein neues Soloprojekt, das ich im letzten Jahr ins Leben gerufen habe, nachdem ich längere Zeit in verschiedenen EBM/Synth-Bands als Live-Drummer gespielt habe. Ich spiele immer noch mit diesen Acts (Tactical Sekt, Tyske Ludder, Harmjoy), aber ich wollte etwas, wo ich ein Ventil für meine eigenen Kreationen habe. J:dead ist eine moderne Synth/Electro-Pop-Band mit Einflüssen aus den 80er Jahren und darüber hinaus!

My name is Jay Taylor and I am the creator behind J:dead. J:dead is my new solo project which I launched within the last year after playing with various EBM/Synth bands as a live drummer for an extended time. I will still play with these acts (Tactical Sekt, Tyske Ludder, Harmjoy) but I wanted something where I have an outlet for my own creations. J:dead is a modern synth/electro pop band with influences from the 80’s and beyond! 

Wann und wie bist du zur Musik gekommen? / when and how did you get into music?

Ich mache seit über 20 Jahren Musik und bin seit 17 Jahren in Bands auf Tour (zuerst in Tactical Sekt). Ich mag eine echte Vielfalt an Musik, aber meine erste Liebe war Metal. Erst später habe ich EBM kennengelernt (und angefangen, in dieser Art von Bands Schlagzeug zu spielen). Von hier aus und als ich älter geworden bin, hat sich mein Musikgeschmack weiterentwickelt und ich kann jetzt viel mehr als den „aggressiven“ Stil aus meinen frühen Jahren schätzen. Diese Wertschätzung für mehr Musik mit Emotionen und Gefühl – hat mir wirklich geholfen, diesen „J:dead“-Sound zu kreieren.

I have been playing music for over 20 years now and have been touring in bands for 17 years  (firstly in Tactical Sekt). I like a real variety of music, but my first love was metal. It was only later on that I was introduced to EBM (and started playing drums in these types of bands). From here and as I have got older my music taste as a lister has evolved and I can now appreciate much more than the „aggressive“ style from my early years. This appreciation for more music with emotion and feeling – has really helped in my creation of that „J:dead“ sound. 

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, dann der Text? / How is a song created? First the melody, then the lyrics?

Mein neues Album (A Complicated Genocide) ist eigentlich in den letzten 10 Jahren entstanden, auch wenn es erst im letzten Jahr produziert wurde. Ich habe Melodien und Akkordfolgen verwendet, die ich in der Vergangenheit kreiert habe, aber nie etwas in Form eines Endprodukts daraus gemacht habe. In den meisten Fällen beginnt ein Song mit einer dieser Melodien oder Akkordfolgen und entwickelt sich von da aus weiter. Ich weiß nie von Anfang an, was ich kreieren möchte, aber sobald ich meine Instrumente um diese Teile herum gebaut habe, entwickelt sich der Song immer ganz natürlich in den Stil (entweder sanft oder aggressiv oder sogar beides), den ich gerade fühle. Die Texte werden bei mir immer als letztes fertiggestellt – auch wenn ich vorher schon Ideen oder Parts habe, denn ich möchte sicherstellen, dass meine Gesangsmelodien den Track ergänzen und sich mit ihm bewegen. J:dead ist natürlich ein Soloprojekt, aber ich arbeite mit dem Produktionsteam von Motel-Music zusammen. Wir haben eine großartige Art zu kollaborieren und ein Endprodukt zu schaffen, indem wir meine Kompositionsfähigkeiten und ihre Produktionsfähigkeiten nutzen.

My new album (A Complicated Genocide) was actually created over the last 10 years even though it was produced within the last year. I have used melodies and chord progressions which I have created in the past but never did anything with in terms of a final product. In most cases a song starts with one of these melodies or chord progressions and evolves out from here. I never know what I want to create from the outset, but once I have built my instruments around these parts the song always evolves naturally into whatever style (either soft or aggressive or even both) I feel at the time. Lyrics are always finalised last for me – even though I may have ideas or parts beforehand as I like to ensure my vocal melodies compliment and move with the track. J:dead is obviously a solo project, but i work with the production team at Motel-Music. We have a great way in collaborating and creating an end product using my composition skills and their production skills.

1) Ich habe zwei kleine Kinder, die immer die ersten Richter eines jeden J:dead-Songs sind
2) Ich liebe es zu kochen
3) Ich habe Industrial/EBM erst richtig entdeckt, als ich gebeten wurde, bei Tactical Sekt mitzumachen
4) Mein größtes musikalisches Bedauern war, meine NIN-Tickets zu verkaufen, als ich ein Teenager war
5) Ich reise gerne mit Freunden und Familie, um neue Orte und Kulturen zu entdecken

4) My biggest musical regret was selling my NIN tickets when i was a teenager
