Interview: Pixelbreed

Hey Alexander, danke für deine Zeit! Aber jetzt doch mal ein wenig mehr Details. Stelle dich doch mal vor und was genau du machst.

Alexander

Ja, Hallo erstmal. Mein Name ist Alexander Fröbel, ich bin 47 Jahre alt und komme aus Dortmund. Ich betreibe das Grafikprojekt “Pixel Breed”, mit dem ich unter anderem Bands wie FunkerVogt, Eisfabrik, E-Craft, Scheuber, ES23, Menschdefekt, j:dead, Frozen Plasma, The Saint Paul, Morphose und viele viele andere betreue. Neben Aufträgen für Musiker, fallen auch schon mal Anfragen aus anderen Bereichen an.. Tattoo Studios oder Anfragen aus dem Make-Up / Beauty Bereich sind auch schon mal dabei. In der Regel möchten die Leute aber eher dreckige, düstere Artworks haben, wenn Sie bei mir anklopfen

Pixelbreed. Wie bist du auf diesen Namen gekommen. Ich meine Pixel ergibt sich ja für mich, vor allem weil man allgemein ja gern Pixelschubser sagt. Und wie bist du überhaupt dazu gekommen das zu machen?

Alexander

Pixel ist ja eben etwas das mit Grafiken an sich zu tun hat und da ich noch was gruseliges dazu haben wollte (Ich bin n riesen Horrorfilm Fan. Ich liebe den Film Nightbreed / Cabal” die Brut der Nacht, ) hab ich hinten noch Breed dran gehangen! und ZACK war der Name fertig! Ich bin gelernter Mediengestalter, habe das also tatsächlich gelernt. Irgendwann hat mich n Kumpel mal gefragt ob ich ihm beim Artwerkeln helfen kann und so fing das ganze dann irgendwann ganz harmlos an und wurde dann stetig mehr und mehr!

Im Nachhinein doch aber etwas, was du nicht mehr missen möchtest oder?

Alexander

Natürlich, das macht schon Spaß! Jeder kommt mit anderen Ideen… Der eine Mittags, der andere um 1 Uhr Morgens, dass kenne ich aber schon!! Aber es macht halt Spaß mit dem “Kunden” (…die meisten davon sind mit der Zeit auch Freunde geworden) etwas auszuarbeiten, was dann letztendlich auf CD oder Vinyl gepresst wird. Torben von Infacted Recordings versorgt mich immer fleißig für sein Label mit Aufträgen, dann wird es auch nicht Langweilig!

Aber am Ende des Tages sind es nicht nur Bands mit Label im Rücken, sondern auch “kleinere” Bands , die ggf. mal jemanden braucht, der über das selbst gestaltete Artwork drüber guckt und vielleicht noch 1-2 Ideen dazu beitragen kann

Ich finde, es ist auch echt ein Privileg, ein Job zu machen, der einem Spaß macht und erfüllt. Hört sich bei dir nach purer Leidenschaft an. Hörst du die Musik der Aufträge auch oder ist es abweichend?

Alexander

Mich interessiert im Prinzip erstmal nur der Titeltrack, der muss mir ne Art Stimmung vorgeben! Deshalb Frage ich meistens wenigstens nach einem Snippet oder dem Song als MP3 … Ich komme ursprünglich eigentlich aus ner GANZ anderen musikalischen Ecke!
Bis auf Schlager höre ich aber tatsächlich FAST alles. Beheimatet bin ich eher im Death Metal/Punk Bereich, habe aber auch viele elektronische Sachen in meiner Sammlung: F242, Nitzer Ebb, VNV Nation Skinny Puppy, SITD oder klassische Sachen wie eben Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, The Mission oder Invisible Limits … Es ist kompliziert.

Wieso kompliziert? Musik ist vielseitig. Es ist doch eher: was holt einen ab und das kann alles sein.
Fällt es dir grundsätzlich immer leicht ein Artwork zu erstellen oder gibt es auch Zeiten, wo du länger an einer Idee brauchst / bzw umsetzung?

Alexander

Man braucht schon ein wenig Zeit sich eine Idee „zurechtzulegen“, man probiert einiges aus und verwirft diese Ideen dann wieder… Oder der Kunde sagt nee, mach mal was anderes, das ist mir zu düster oder zu hell oder zu blau, rot, grün… Manchmal wird es problematisch, wenn jeder in einer Band mitreden möchte. DAS geht meistens in die Hose, denn wie heißt es so schön, “Zu viele Köche verderben den Brei!”. Da muss EINER eine Entscheidung treffen und fertig! Sonst wird man NIE fertig.

Aber zwischen 3 Wochen und 3 Monaten ist alles möglich. Das liegt auch etwas an der Deadline! Jetzt um die Ecke kommen mit Alex ich brauche übermorgen n Artwork… wird schwierig! Man muss mir da schon etwas Zeit geben!

Kreativität benötigt Freiraum. Kenne ich. Gibt es etwas, was du gar nicht so toll findest bzw. blöd?
Oder macht dir das immer 100% Spaß?

Alexander

Letztendlich ist der Kunde König… Ich bin ja kein Diktator sondern mache Vorschläge. Allerdings bevorzuge ich (Wie wohl jeder Künstler) wenn man mir Freiraum gibt. Da fühle ich mich wohl und dabei kommen meistens die besten Sachen bei rum! Wenn jetzt jemand kommt und mir quasi kaum noch Freiraum gibt, das ist eher nicht so zufriedenstellend für mich! ALLERDINGS experimentiere ich auch schon mal gern mit den Bands rum, so kann es schonmal vorkommen das so 10 Previews an nem Abend hin und hergeschickt werden bis es eben passt! Ich drücke ja nicht auf nen Knopf und rufe “TADAAAAA fertig!”

Nee, das ist schon etwas komplizierter! ABER, das macht ja eben den Spaß aus! Ausprobieren, vergleichen, anpassen, löschen, nochmal anpassen… bis alle happy sind!

Yes, hello first. My name is Alexander Fröbel, I’m 47 years old and I’m from Dortmund. I run the graphic project “Pixel Breed”, with which I support bands like FunkerVogt, Eisfabrik, E-Craft, Scheuber, ES23, Menschdefekt, j:dead, Frozen Plasma, The Saint Paul, Morphose and many many more. Pixelbreed. How did you come up with this name. I mean pixel is what I’m going by, especially since people generally like to say pixelbreed. And how did you come to do this in the first place?

Alexander

Pixel is something that has to do with graphics and because I wanted to have something creepy (I’m a huge horror movie fan. I love the movie Nightbreed / Cabal” the brood of the night, ) I added Breed to it! and ZACK the name was ready! I am a trained media designer, so I actually learned that. At some point n buddy asked me if I can help him with Artwerkeln and so the whole thing then started quite harmless and then became steadily more and more!

In retrospect, but something you no longer want to miss, right?

Alexander

Of course, it’s fun! Everyone comes up with different ideas… The one at noon, the other at 1 o’clock in the morning, that I know however already! But it’s fun to work out something with the “customer” (…most of them have become friends in the course of time), which will finally be pressed on CD or vinyl. Torben from Infacted Recordings supplies me always diligently for his label with orders, then it is also not boring!

But at the end of the day, it’s not only bands with a label behind them, but also “smaller” bands that might need someone to look over the artwork they’ve created themselves and maybe add 1-2 ideas to it.

I think it’s a real privilege to do a job that’s fun and fulfilling. It sounds like pure passion with you. Do you listen to the music of the jobs as well or is it different?

Alexander

In principle, I’m only interested in the title track, which must give me a kind of mood! That’s why I usually ask for at least a snippet or the song as MP3 … I come originally actually from ner WHOLE other musical corner!
Except for Schlager I hear but actually almost everything. Why complicated? Music is versatile. It’s rather: what picks you up and that can be everything.
Is it always easy for you to create artwork or are there times when you need more time to work on an idea?

Alexander

You need a little bit of time to come up with an idea, you try a lot of things and then discard them again… Or the customer says no, do something else, that’s too dark or too bright or too blue, red, green… Sometimes it becomes problematic when everyone in a band wants to have a say. THAT usually goes in the pants, because as the saying goes, “Too many cooks spoil the broth!”. Someone has to make a decision and that’s it! Otherwise you will NEVER be done.

But between 3 weeks and 3 months, anything is possible. That is also somewhat due to the deadline! Now come around the corner with Alex I need the day after tomorrow n artwork … will be difficult! You have to give me some time!

Creativity needs space. I know that. Is there anything you don’t find so great or stupid?
Or do you always enjoy it 100%?

Alexander

Ultimately, the customer is king… I am not a dictator but make suggestions. However, I prefer (as probably every artist) if one gives me free space. That’s where I feel comfortable and most of the time the best things come out of it! If now someone comes and gives me hardly any freedom, that’s rather not so satisfying for me! HOWEVER, I also like to experiment with the bands around, so it can happen that so 10 previews on a night are sent back and forth until it just fits! I do not press a button and shout “TADAAAAA ready!”
