Interview: DarkTunes [Label]

Stelle dich doch kurz mal vor

Mein Name ist Raphael, ich bin in Frankreich geboren, genauer gesagt im Elsass. Mit 19 Jahren bin ich nach Deutschland gekommen, um die deutsche Sprache zu lernen und dann Musikbusiness zu studieren.
Nach meinem Bachelor habe ich angefangen das Label zu gründen.
Nach paar Jahren hat es so gut geklappt, dass ich dies hauptberuflich machen konnte.

Wie bist du zur Musik gekommen? 

Musik war immer ein Teil meines Lebens. Seit ich klein war
Ich bin in einer streng katholischen Schule groß geworden. Früher hatte ich keine Berührung mit Rock, Metal oder dergleichen.
Mit 13 oder 14 Jahren bin ich auf eine normale Schule gegangen und am Wochenende hat man das gemacht, was jeder pubertierende Teenager macht. Eigentlich, das was man nicht sollte.
Der Reiz war also dementsprechend groß diese “Teufelsmusik” zu hören.
Und so bin ich in die Gothic- & Heavy Metalwelt reingerutscht.

Angefangen hat es mit Marilyn Manson und Rammstein. Zu dieser Zeit waren das meine Vorbilder!

Erst später, so mit 16 Jahren habe ich mich mit dem Thema Musikkomposition beschäftigt, vor allem mit elektronischer.

War es schon immer dein Traum, ein Label zu gründen? 

Als Kind nicht, ich weiß nicht mehr genau, was ich machen wollte, aber ich hatte eine Faszination für Elektronik. Ich habe auch ein Fachabitur (Fachelektronik) absolviert.
Danach habe ich festgestellt, dass ich es doch nicht mehr so cool finde!
Ab dem Zeitpunkt, wo ich wusste, ich will Musikbusiness studieren, war das auf jeden Fall mein Ziel!
Ich hatte keinen Bock, bei einem Label zu arbeiten.
Mit 20 war es schon mein Lebensziel, mein eigenes Label zu gründen.

Wie kam es zu dieser Idee? Und würdest du es immer wieder tun?

Für mich war es ein Traumberuf. Nach meinem Studium habe ich bei einem Unternehmen bei Facebook im Marketingbereich gearbeitet. Hier zu erwähnen ist, dass ich vor dem Musikbusiness-Studium, Marketing studiert und auch ein Diplom gemacht habe.
Ich spürte schnell, dass ich nicht mit ganzem Herzen dabei war.
Die Leidenschaft hat gefehlt. Dadurch war ich übermotiviert, mein eigenes Label zu gründen.
Ich habe neben meinen Hauptjob an den Wochenenden viel und hart gearbeitet.
Finanziell gesehen, hätte ich bei dieser Agentur bleiben sollen, weil ein Nischen-Label (also ein Label im Gothic und Metal-Bereich), damit wird man nicht reich.
Aber ich wache jeden Tag auf und bin einfach Happy!
Es erfüllt mich und ich bin so dankbar, dass ich das machen kann!
Vielleicht hört das irgendwann auf, da ich es nicht mehr finanziell stemmen kann oder aus anderen Gründen. Ich würde diesen Weg nochmal gehen, auch wenn es schwer war.
Ein Newcomer-Label in einem Nischenbereich zu gründen, wo es schon andere Label gibt, die quasi das Monopol haben und schon wirklich sehr lange aktiv sind, war es wirklich nicht so einfach dorthin zu kommen, wo ich jetzt bin. Und da ist noch viel Luft nach oben!!!
Ich muss sagen, ich würde es nicht jedem empfehlen, ein Label zu gründen.

Was macht dir am meisten Spaß / Freude?

Ganz klar die Vielseitigkeit von meinem Job! Ich bin jemand, ich brauche Herausforderungen und mir wird sehr schnell langweilig! Ich muss mir selbst sehr viel Wissen aneignen zum Beispiel Video-Editing, Photoshop, Artwork, Texte schreiben und vieles mehr.
Ich beschäftige mich damit, was in der heutigen Zeit wichtig ist, heute sind es viel mehr soziale Medien. Oder auch als Spotify noch ganz neu war. Man probiert herum und das macht mir wirklich sehr viel Spaß!
Und natürlich, was ich an meinem Beruf sehr liebe, sind die ganzen Künstler!
So viele unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten. Man steht immer wieder vor neuen Herausforderungen.

Es macht sicherlich nicht nur Spaß, was sind die größten Hürden? Gibt es auch etwas, was du so gar nicht magst?

Natürlich macht nicht alles Spaß zum Beispiel alles rund um die Buchhaltung.
Meine Künstler bekommen alle 6 Monate ein Statement of Sales, das heißt:
Ein wirklich sehr aufwendiges Dokument, in der die Künstler je die einzelnen Streams, Downloads, Verkauf, nachvollziehen können. Bei mir ist Transparenz sehr, sehr wichtig!!!!
Das Dokument benötigt eine ganze Woche, in dieser ich jeden Tag acht Stunden mit Exelarbeiten verbringe. Eine Woche Exelarbeit zu machen ist super anstrengend, da man wirklich hoch konzentriert sein muss.

Erzähl ein wenig über dein Label und wieso genau du diese Musikrichtungen gewählt hast

Wie ganz zu Anfang erwähnt: Diese Teufelsmusik war verboten, ich wurde in einer streng katholischen Schule groß und dann habe ich alles nachgeholt, wo ich das nicht hören durfte.
In den 90ern haben mich Bands wie, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein & Ozzy Osbourne richtig gepackt.
Die Jungs durften auch keine Ohrringe tragen & durften keine langen Haare haben.
Sobald ich aus der Schule raus war: lange Haare, erstes Piercing und T-Shirt mit Totenköpfe und so weiter.
Ich fühle mich in der Goth- & Metalszene zu Hause!

***Während dessen Raph, mir das in seiner Aufnahme erzählt, stellt sich heraus, dass es DarkTunes nun schon seit 10 Jahren gibt! Grund zu feiern!!! Definitiv. Raph hat sich das aufgeschrieben!!!
Ich glaube ich muss ihn daran erinnern. DENN HALLO??..Klar, wir wollen alle feiern.!!!***

Ich arbeite außerdem total gerne mit Zetteln, überall nur Zettel an meinem Schreibtisch!
Wenn es dann zu viele werden, mache ich ein Dokument.
Zudem muss ich verstehen, was der Künstler mit seinem Lied vermitteln möchte, damit ich es eben so transparent und authentisch an den Hörer da draußen vermittel.
Die Arbeit mit dem Künstler ist super wichtig, Hand in Hand und miteinander zu arbeiten.
Empathisch zu sein, ist hier definitiv der Schlüssel zum Erfolg!
Bei mir gibt es nicht, dass das Label über dem Künstler steht!

Welche tollen Neuveröffentlichungen erwarten uns dieses Jahr? Magst du uns einen Vorgeschmack geben?

Das ist immer Top-Secret! Aber was kann ich sagen? Das WGT wird ganz toll! Da spielen einige Bands von uns. Zudem könnt ihr vieles von der Band “Blackbook”& Omnimar erwarten.
Es wird einiges von unseren Metalbands geben. Also, es gibt einiges für euch!
Das erste halbe Jahr von 2023 wird es keine Woche ohne Veröffentlichung geben und das ist schön!

Was möchtest du sonst noch loswerden? 

Ich wollte mich einfach bedanken, vor allem bei Leuten, wie dir (äh…hilfe??...), die auch für die Szene brennen und etwas für die Szene machen. Es ist einfach schön, dass es noch Leute gibt, die Podcasts, Webseiten, Blogs, etc. betreiben. Oder auch DJ’s.
Es ist schön, dass Leute diese Szene am Laufen hält.
An alle Macher der Gothicszene und die ganzen Fans: Danke, dass es euch gibt!

Introduce yourself briefly

My name is Raphael, I was born in France, more precisely in Alsace. I came to Germany at the age of 19 to learn the German language and then to study music business.
After my bachelor I started the label.
After a few years it worked out so well that I could do this full time.

How did you get into music? 

Music has always been a part of my life. Since I was little
I grew up in a strict Catholic school. I didn’t have any exposure to rock, metal or anything like that before.
When I was 13 or 14 I went to a normal school and on weekends you did what every pubescent teenager does. Actually, what you shouldn’t.
So the attraction was accordingly to listen to this “devil music”.
And so I slipped into the Gothic & Heavy Metal world.

It started with Marilyn Manson and Rammstein. At that time they were my idols!

Only later, around the age of 16, I got involved with music composition, especially electronic.

Was it always your dream to start a label? 

Not as a kid, I don’t remember exactly what I wanted to do, but I had a fascination with electronics. I also graduated with a specialized baccalaureate, I specialized electronics. After that, I realized that I didn’t think it was so cool after all!
From the moment I knew I wanted to study music business, that was definitely my goal!
I had no desire to work at a label.
When I was 20, it was already my life goal to start my own label.

How did this idea come about? And would you do it again and again?

For me it was a dream job. After my studies, I worked for a company at Facebook in the marketing department. It’s worth mentioning here that before studying music business, I studied marketing and also got a diploma.
I quickly felt that my heart was not in it.
The passion was missing. As a result, I was over-motivated to start my own label.
I worked a lot and hard on the weekends in addition to my main job.
Financially, I should have stayed with this agency, because a niche label (i.e. a label in the gothic and metal area), you don’t get rich with that.
But I wake up every day and I’m just Happy!
It fulfills me and I’m so grateful that I can do this!
Maybe it will stop one day, because I can’t do it financially anymore or for other reasons. I would go this way again, even if it was hard.
Starting a newcomer label in a niche area where there are already other labels that have the monopoly, so to speak, and have been active for a really long time, it really wasn’t that easy to get to where I am now. And there is still a lot of room to go!!!
I have to say, I wouldn’t recommend starting a label to everyone.

What is the most fun / joy for you?

Definitely the versatility of my job! I am someone, I need challenges and I get bored very quickly! I have to acquire a lot of knowledge myself for example video editing, Photoshop, artwork, writing texts and much more.
I deal with what is important in today’s time, today it is much more social media. Or even when Spotify was brand new. You try around and I really enjoy that a lot!
And of course, what I really love about my job is all the artists!
So many different personalities. You’re always faced with new challenges.

It’s certainly not all fun, what are the biggest hurdles? Is there also something you don’t like at all?

Of course not everything is fun, for example everything around accounting.
My artists get a statement of sales every 6 months, that is:
A really very elaborate document in which the artists can ever track the individual streams, downloads, sales. Transparency is very, very important for me!!!!
The document takes a whole week, during which I spend eight hours every day doing exel work. Doing a week of exel work is super exhausting because you have to be really highly focused.

Tell a little bit about your label and why exactly you chose these music styles

As mentioned at the very beginning: this devil music was forbidden, I grew up in a strict Catholic school and then I made up for everything where I wasn’t allowed to listen to it.
In the 90s bands like, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein & Ozzy Osbourne really got me.
The guys were also not allowed to wear earrings & were not allowed to have long hair.
As soon as I was out of school: long hair, first piercing and t-shirt with skulls and so on.
I feel at home in the goth & metal scene!

***While Raph, tells me this in his recording, it turns out that DarkTunes has now been around for 10 years! Reason to celebrate!!! Definitely. Raph wrote that down!!!
I think I need to remind him of that. HELLO??.Sure, we all want to celebrate!!!***.

I also totally love working with notes, just notes everywhere on my desk!
Then when there are too many, I make a document.
In addition, I have to understand what the artist wants to convey with his song, so that I convey it just as transparent and authentic to the listener of the outside.
Working with the artist is super important, working hand in hand and with each other.
Being empathetic is definitely the key to success here!
With me, there is no such thing as the label being above the artist!

What great new releases can we expect this year? Care to give us a taste?

That’s always top secret! But what can I say? The WGT is going to be great! Some bands of us will play there. You can also expect a lot from the band “Blackbook”& Omnimar.
There will be a lot from our metal bands. So, there is a lot for you!
The first half year of 2023 there won’t be a week without a release and that’s nice!

What else would you like to get off your chest? 

I just wanted to say thank you, especially to people like you (uh…help??…) who are also burning for the scene and doing something for the scene. It’s just nice that there are still people running podcasts, websites, blogs, etc. Or DJ’s too.
It’s nice that people keep this scene going.
To all the creators of the gothic scene and all the fans: Thank you for existing!
