Stellt Euch kurz vor / Bandvorstellung

Erst einmal vielen Dank für die Einladung zu diesem Interview! Wir sind die New Wave Pop Band SEA OF SIN, bestehend aus Klaus (Synths, Gitarren, Production) und Frank (Gesang, Lyrics). Wir machen zusammen Musik seit Anfang der 90er Jahre. Einige kennen uns vielleicht noch von früher durch unser Debut-Album „Watch Out!“ und Songs wie „Last Day In Paradise“, „Truth“ oder „I Live My Life“ sowie die 97er EP „Illuminate“, die Heiko Maile von Camouflage produziert hat. Nach einer längeren Auszeit sind wir 2018 als Duo zurückgekehrt. Wie es seitdem gelaufen ist übersteigt unsere vorsichtigen Erwartungen komplett, damit war nach der langen Pause wirklich nicht rechnen! Wir haben seitdem drei Alben und zwei Remix-Compilations veröffentlicht, schafften es damit mehrmals an die Spitze der Deutschen Alternative Charts und sind jetzt auch wieder vermehrt live auf den Bühnen unterwegs, was uns besonders freut!

Wann und wie seid ihr zur Musik gekommen?

Wir kennen uns schon eine ganze Ewigkeit, seit den 80ern, wir waren auf dem gleichen Gymnasium. Wir haben Ende der 80er damit begonnen, als DJs auf Partys aufzulegen. Dadurch ist schon bald der Wunsch entstanden, selbst Musik zu machen. Allerdings weniger, um die Hits anderer Bands nachzuspielen, sondern vielmehr um eigene Songs zu schreiben. Das hat uns von Anfang an gefesselt, zu Beginn der 90er haben wir dann unsere erste Synthpop-Band gegründet, zusammen mit unserem Kumpel Dirk, relativ früh stieß dann noch Markus dazu und wir waren zunächst unter dem Namen „Covent Garden“ musikalisch aktiv. Das lief auch alles super an, wir unterschrieben rasch unseren ersten Plattenvertrag bei einem Hamburger Indie-Label. Doch dann begann die Phase der extrem turbulenten 90er Jahre für uns. Das alles en detail zu erzählen würde hier vermutlich den Rahmen sprengen (u.a. Band Namens-Änderung aufgrund Dopplung, Label-Bankrott etc. pp), es sollte am Ende wohl einfach nicht sein.

Wie entsteht ein Song? Erst die Melodie, oder erst der Text?

-Im Entstehungsprozess unserer Songs und Produktionen haben wir mehr oder weniger eine klare Rollen-Verteilung, die sich im Laufe der Jahre so herauskristallisiert bzw. bewährt hat. Jeder von uns entwickelt in der Regel für sich erste grobe Songideen und Demos, die wir sammeln. Die räumliche Entfernung zwischen Hamburg (Klaus) und Stuttgart (Frank) erschwert das regelmäßige gemeinsame Jammen leider etwas. Welche der Songideen davon letztlich weiterverfolgt werden, entscheiden wir dann gemeinsam. Klaus arbeitet diese Ideen dann weiter in seinem Homestudio aus und Frank schärft parallel dazu seine Vocal-Lines und verfasst die Lyrics dazu. Für uns die perfekte Rollen-Teilung, die auch heute noch bzw. wieder super funktioniert.

Was bedeutet Euch Musik?

Musik ist für uns beide ein ganz essentieller Bestandteil im Leben – sowohl das Musizieren als auch das Hören und „Konsumieren“. Wie wichtig gerade auch das Schreiben und Performen eigener Musik ist, hat sich vor allem nach der langen Pause gezeigt – da merkt man erst mal, wie sehr einem das wirklich gefehlt hat und wie viel kreative Energie das wieder freisetzen kann! Die generelle Liebe zur Musik – insbesondere die melancholischen und etwas düsteren Spielarten – ist über all die Jahre aber nie erloschen, wir können uns ein Leben ohne Musik schlichtweg nicht vorstellen! Man kann zu Musik tanzen, sich darin völlig verlieren, Trost suchen, Frust oder negative Energie abbauen oder aber in Erinnerungen schwelgen… irgendwie ein eigenes Universum und eine Barriere-übergreifende Sprache!

Fünf Fakten über Euch

1. Wir feiern nächstes Jahr unser 30jähriges Band Jubiläum – unglaublich! Und agieren aktuell als 100% Indie Artist ohne Label, Vertrieb etc. mit allen Vor- und Nachteilen.
2. Remix-Collabs mit anderen Künstlern und Bands sind uns besonders wichtig – so haben u.a. bereits Mesh, The New Division oder Zoot Woman unsere Songs re-interpretiert, auf der anderen Seite durften wir u.a. Remixe für andere Künstler wie z.B. Anne Clark oder Zynic beisteuern.
3. Wir sind „Kinder“ der 80er und 90er Jahre und lieben die Musik & Bands aus diesen Dekaden besonders – integrieren aber auch Einflüsse aktuellerer Bands und Stilrichtungen (Editors, The Killers etc.). Wir haben generell ein breit gefächertes Musik-Interessen-Spektrum, von Rock/Heavy über Indiepop zu Synth/Wave/Goth und Techno/Electro, auch wenn man das nicht immer alles so konkret raushören kann – für uns die perfekte musikalische DNA .
4. Wir haben Anfang der 90er einmal (noch unter dem akten Bandnamen „Covent Garden“) bei ELF99 im Rahmen des Newcomer-Contests „Der Heiße Heinz“ performt mit unserem Song „Strange Vibrations“ – zum Glück waren wir dann am Ende dann leicht „heiß“! … damals waren wir auch echt noch ziemlich grün hinter den Ohren!
5. Wir lieben es, unsere Songs auf der Bühne live vor Publikum zu performen und freuen uns sehr, dass wir dieses Jahr schon viele tolle Konzerte spielen durften (u.a. als Special Guest bei Diary of Dreams auf deren Deutschland Tour im März diesen Jahres). Bis Jahresende stehen noch einige Gigs in deutschen Landen an, auf die wir uns derzeit aktiv vorbereiten.

Was möchtest Ihr Euren Fans noch sagen?

Wir sind extrem dankbar für all den Support und die Unterstützung unserer Fans nach der langen Pause – das war und ist alles andere als selbstverständlich, gerade in einer Musik- und Medienwelt, wie wir sie heute vorfinden mit all den Herausforderungen, Schattenseiten und der Reizüberflutung. Ein besonderer Dank an dieser Stelle auch an all die Booker, Venues und fleißigen Helferlein in der Live- und Event-Branche, die es nach der Corona-Zeit unverändert extrem schwer haben!

Aktuelle News / Konzertdaten / Infos

Dieses Jahr stehen – Stand jetzt – noch drei Konzerte an, auf die wir uns sehr freuen:
am 06.10. spielen wir als Support für Forced to Mode in Bremen (bereits ausverkauft),
am 21.10. eröffnen wir dann den Abend für Diorama in Leipzig und am
15.12. spielen wir im Rahmen des „Dark Christmal Brawl“ in Hannover in der Subkultur (u.a. mit Torul und Zynic).
Für 2024 stehen auch bereits einige Termine fest (u.a. am 24.02.24 in Berlin beim „Dark Rush Festival“ zusammen mit u.a. Kirlian Camera und Psyche), wir hoffen natürlich das da dann noch einiges dazu kommt! Wir arbeiten parallel auch an einem Live-Konzert/Event im Rahmen unseres 30-jährigen Band-Jubiläums nächstes Jahr, bei dem dann auch befreundete Bands mit von der Partie sein sollen. Introduce yourself briefly / Band introduction

First of all, thank you very much for inviting us to this interview! We are the New Wave Pop Band SEA OF SIN, consisting of Klaus (synths, guitars, production) and Frank (vocals, lyrics). We’ve been making music together since the early 90s. Some may still know us from before through our debut album „Watch Out!“ and songs like „Last Day In Paradise“, „Truth“ or „I Live My Life“ as well as the 97 EP „Illuminate“ produced by Heiko Maile from Camouflage. After a longer time out, we returned as a duo in 2018. How it has gone since then completely exceeds our cautious expectations, this was really not expected after the long break! We have since released three albums and two remix compilations, made it to the top of the German Alternative Charts several times and are now also increasingly live on the stages again, which makes us especially happy!

When and how did you get into music?

We’ve known each other for ages, since the 80s, we went to the same high school. We started DJing at parties at the end of the 80s. This soon led to the desire to make music ourselves. Not so much to play the hits of other bands, but rather to write our own songs. That’s what captivated us from the beginning, at the beginning of the 90s we founded our first synthpop band, together with our buddy Dirk, relatively early Markus joined us and we were musically active under the name „Covent Garden“. It all started really well, we quickly signed our first record deal with an indie label in Hamburg. But then the phase of the extremely turbulent 90s began for us. To tell all this in detail would probably go beyond the scope of this article (e.g. band name change due to doubling, label bankruptcy etc. pp), but in the end it just wasn’t meant to be.

How is a song created? First the melody, or first the lyrics?

In the development process of our songs and productions we have more or less a clear distribution of roles, which has crystallized and proven itself over the years. Each of us usually develops first rough song ideas and demos for himself, which we collect. The distance between Hamburg (Klaus) and Stuttgart (Frank) makes regular jamming a bit difficult. We then decide together which of the song ideas will ultimately be pursued. Klaus then works on these ideas in his home studio, while Frank sharpens his vocal lines and writes the lyrics. For us, this is the perfect division of roles, which still works very well today.

What does music mean to you?

Music is an essential part of life for both of us – making music as well as listening to it and „consuming“ it. How important it is to write and perform our own music became apparent especially after the long break – that’s when you realize how much you really missed it and how much creative energy it can release again! The general love for music – especially the melancholic and somewhat darker varieties – has never died out over all these years, we simply can’t imagine a life without music! You can dance to music, lose yourself completely in it, seek comfort, release frustration or negative energy, or reminisce… somehow a universe of its own and a barrier-crossing language!

Five facts about you

1. We celebrate our 30th band anniversary next year – unbelievable! And we are currently operating as a 100% indie artist without a label, distribution etc. with all the advantages and disadvantages.
2. Remix collabs with other artists and bands are very important to us – so Mesh, The New Division or Zoot Woman have already re-interpreted our songs, on the other hand we were allowed to contribute remixes for other artists like Anne Clark or Zynic.
3. We are „children“ of the 80s and 90s and love the music & bands from these decades especially – but also integrate influences of more current bands and styles (Editors, The Killers etc.). We generally have a wide spectrum of music interests, from Rock/Heavy to Indiepop to Synth/Wave/Goth and Techno/Electro, even if you can’t always hear it all so concretely – for us the perfect musical DNA .
4. we have performed in the early 90s once (still under the old band name „Covent Garden“) at ELF99 in the context of the newcomer contest „Der Heiße Heinz“ with our song „Strange Vibrations“ – fortunately we were then slightly „hot“ at the end! … at that time we were still quite green behind the ears!
5. we love to perform our songs live on stage in front of an audience and are very happy that we had the chance to play many great concerts this year (e.g. as special guest with Diary of Dreams on their Germany tour in March this year). Until the end of the year there are still some gigs in Germany coming up, for which we are actively preparing at the moment.

What else would you like to say to your fans?

We are extremely grateful for all the support and the support of our fans after the long break – that was and is anything but self-evident, especially in a music and media world as we find it today with all the challenges, dark sides and the overstimulation. A special thanks to all the bookers, venues and hard-working helpers in the live and event business, who still have an extremely hard time after the Corona time!

This year we have – as of now – three concerts coming up, which we are really looking forward to:
on 06.10. we play as support for Forced to Mode in Bremen (already sold out),
on 21.10. we will open the evening for Diorama in Leipzig and on
15.12. we will play as part of the „Dark Christmal Brawl“ in Hannover at the Subkultur (with Torul and Zynic among others).
